Patreon-Game plans.

After my last post, I considered how many months I should wait before switching to making a game with weekly updates in place of animations, or if I should at all. After all, surely people who are supporting my Patreon would be pretty bummed if I just stopped doing animations this soon.

Of course, then I remembered that I can just...you know, ask them. >_>

So, keeping in mind that only about half the people who vote in the polls have "voted" so far, around 64% were favor of making a weekly updated game instead of doing animations. Now, it isn't enough for me to give up animations right away, but it is enough for me to start thinking about what I would actually do in more detail. Especially since a lot of the people who voted against it did so because they think that a game would be more difficult.

So, over the next week or so I'll be posting about some of my ideas, and showing off any style tests or sketches that I do. Once I have an idea that I think is viable, whenever I have the time I'll start creating the base engine for the game (What I'll be building on each week). Once it's playable, I'll basically do a test run for two weeks, so that we'll know what kind of content I could do in 8 hours a week.

At that point, after people have played the base part of the game, I'll do another poll on Patreon. If a large majority is in favor of replacing animations with a game, then I'll do it. If it's not a huge majority, then I may do both, but every second week (alternating). It all depends on how people react. May not do games at all.

Anyhow, that's all for now. Feel free to make suggestions about what you'd like to see.

  1. How exactly would a patreon game with extra characters work? Is it going to be the equivalent of DLC? Because that would be a big NO from me.

    1. Basically, there would be a base amount of content. (for example, a game with 2 enemies with H-animations, or a town with two H-events). Every week, I'd add some form of H-content and game. Eventually, with the expansion of content, it would reach the size of a normal game, and I'd still keep adding to it. Depending on the type of game, it could mean it's a game like Eroico where each week it get's closer to completion, or it could mean a game like minecraft where each week content is added that makes the game better.

      Because the game would be funded through Patreon, I wouldn't be selling the game. It would just be available here for download. Might put up the source code, too.

  2. Maybe there could be a way to integrate Weekly Animations-like content into the game from time to time Slave Maker style, as cameos. Don't know how though :( Random girls raped in a dungeon?

    I'm in favor of a game, but also would like to see a bit more weekly animations since so little girls got their chance yet.

    And well, since Weekly animations are paid for per creation, you wouldn't have to cancel them outright, just put a big sign ON HIATUS - CHECK MY GAME PATREON into the description.

    2. Would have to make some sense though, for example if the game were a sci-fi or fantasy, Hilda with her hat and denim shorts would be out of place. You could play the parody card and have characters that just closely resemble them but fit the world. Or they'd just be naked because they were kidnapped by monsters and don't need clothes anymore :3

    4. I like this notion. We could suggest enemies and traps with some theme that you set (to match the dungeons they'd be in), and from time to time we could vote on some cameos who are just there to get raped and maybe rescued by the MC.

      I'd keep town content entirely up to you without any voting so you can create some more elaborate stories without being hindered by what's popular.

    8. I have an idea. In dungeons, there could be some black rooms with sexy noises coming out of them. The heroine would look through a keyhole and see something like in these current animations. Cut to red and our angry panting heroine standing over a rescued girl.

      Sometimes they could also be mimics, where she's lured in a gets a hi-res scene of herself instead ^^

      Either case, her health gets replenished ^^

    10. I prefer this sort of compromise over switching between projects each week. If you did some great work on an animation, you could as well use it in a game. Unless you wanted to do pure animations to take a break from game-making ^____^

  3. Hi, we already briefly spoke on ULMF on the topic of character design. If you ask what I'd like, that'd be a hotblooded heroine, wielding a close-range weapon (Sword is probably the default but it could be anything. What about upgrade-able weapons, maaaaaybe? If you want do a roguelike, she should just have a starting weapon that she could possibly change for something more exotic further during the run, but she'd lose it if she lost the run). With a short top and either pigtails or a ponytail.

    Also I'd like destructible clothes, just two or three layers at most. (top, bottom, maybe panties as separate)

  4. I'd just like some gradual clothing damage system. It's about the foreplay, when things strip her first, making their intentions clear =)

    Could also add some depth. You'd you have to keep track of not only of your health, but also your clothes because of some H attacks by enemies being nearly unavoidable when in the nude.

    2. My yes for enemies who can rip pieces of clothes off you, and also for machines and magic that can strip you completely in matter of seconds. No for semi-torn versions of clothes. Keep it simple and give it some nice embarrassed animations whenever the MC loses her clothes =)

    5. In conjunction with hornyness mentioned below, I'd really like as an example some demons, throwing spells that instantly put the heroine in bondage gear and maximize her hornyness level. Not exactly something you see every day >.<

  5. Yeah, show off something, do at least one draw animation because that is possibly the biggest perk of being a Weekly Animations patron, you'll see what happens when people give feedback once again.

    I personally am in favor of a game and can't wait to see some sketches :)

  6. Just here to suggest Spelunky style rogue-lite+platformer+dungeon-crawl once again, since I think it could really match your style and also enable variable random levels where you could just start generating new content once it's added into the game.

  9. ever thought about funding it through Kickstarter? Time limitations might not make that possible but with that you'd have a bigger budget (possibly) to work with at the start of the project and the patreon support could also be fuel for the game along the way.

    1. Kicstarter (or Offbeatr in this case since we're talking H-games here) is for projects with planned size, and he seems to want to make this an ongoing thing :) If your Kicstarter budget runs out, you're boned. Using Offbeatr wouldn't probably end any better than the Noaika pre-orders :)

Could you make a horniness bar, which could be increase by certain attacks, traps injecting her with aphrodisiacs, or just some environments themselves having that gradual effect on her (aphrodisiacs in the air, magic, breeding girls stuck to walls). If the bar reached certain levels, she could spontaneously strip, start masturbating (if no enemy is in certain distance), or even present herself to enemies when the bar reaches its top limit.

    4. I like the idea that the protagonist could get so horny she removes parts of her outfit. Could temporarily remove some horniness, but if you lose all clothes, there is nothing stopping horniness from reaching more dangerous levels. Would not connect health to horniness directly, makes no sense.

  11. I like this idea.

    I've been following creators like NoMoshing (Harem Collector) and Cypress Zeta (Overwhored) for quite a while now. And they have had some fairly good success with Patreon all things considering.

    I think you should stick with the rotation idea. Keep things simple and just release a game update on an irregular schedule. Thinking up a story and making the resources to populate your idea can end up taking an unforeseen amount of time and I don't think you are the kind of person that likes to cut corners.

    This way, you don't have to stress out getting things done all at once.

    I'm looking forward to the game you make if you decide to go that rout :)

  12. I like the idea of a game like that; and if I could make a suggestion - multiple playable characters. Later on, though, not from the get go. But a few different characters, maybe even both genders. Or mayhaps a customizable main character, that would be cool.

    2. No. No. No. No. No. Listen. VH would be the best damn game ever if they just focused on Nanako and just tried to tell her story. But no, they have to try telling a bloated saga of a whole damn harem and you see how well it went. Focus on one character and make it the most worthwhile thing. Each character multiplies the effort necessary to get even the simplest things done.

      If he does all the features already suggested (dungeon crawling with H enemies and traps, rescuing of girls, explore-able town and quests/story scenes there-in, clothing damage, H meter, and whatever else people could suggest during the project and he deems worthy of adding) this game will be a blast. All that matters is that the character design and personality of that one character is good. Forcing him to do animations for 10 (or even 2) characters every time he adds a new enemy is a big no no. Maybe, if he was sometime absolutely sure, that he cannot cover any other fetish and sexy situation with that character, he can add a new one to breathe in some fresh air. But that is absolutely irrelevant to discuss now.

      Also, I am against character customization. Well designed characters are much better then a hodge-podge of independently designed parts mixed by the user. Not even saying how it would complicate things. You want a lot of good content for a character, stick to one character. I much prefer Geralt and his story designed specifically for him over any player designed blank slate Dragonborn.

  13. Alright, I'm kinda against the idea of you doing the Patreon game thing as I said in the previous post, but here's my totally unbiased/not for me idea that I think would be pretty cool.

    I think you should revisit Monster Girls again (like in Eroico) but I think the theme should be that there are Monster Girls that live in the towns as well as the Wild ones out in the fields and forests. This way I think any new content you make for the game can be incredibly diverse, like you might have made a lamia, harpy, slime and centaur but the next update might have a different type of those monster girls (e.g. Phoenix Harpy or Rose Plant Girl).
    In the town, the Monster Girls might give you quests for different "rewards" (be they items or something a little more valuable) and if you rank up from doing these quests then you gain reputation and you're allowed into a new town if you choose to travel there (a.k.a. when the next update comes to add more space for new content).
    There can also be human men and women living in the town too but I thought it'd be a point to make it revolve around Monster Girls. Maybe reputation can even get you availability to new jobs and you can become a guard to throw rapists and murderers in jail plus you can occasionally find civilians being raped outside the town walls, so you could choose to save them. (I'm trying to hold back my ideas, I swear)

    One last idea for the game but this'll probably be way too ambitious but it'd also allow the most space for content: Being able to choose your species and gender, thus allowing for a combination of different animations.
    Of course to start off, you'd have to limit the player as a human (male or female would be up to you) and just slowly add these animations every update.

    Basically these small updates would eventually add up to one off the biggest H-games content wise and even if the updates are tiny, people will have a lot to look forward to as the Patreon grows.
    God dammit, you've really got my game design brain on a roll now so it kinda needs some itching.
    (Anyone) Tell me what you think of the idea or any way to improve it and I'll be glad to listen. It'd be pretty great if this became a thing. Just let me know...

    2. The thing is that monster girls are a very specific kind of fetish. I would not define variability by how many crazily different kind of girls you can fuck. Personally, in Eroico I like the humanoid girls the most, the others didn't do it for me much, with just a few exceptions. You know why? They did some interesting things with the protagonist even with no context whatsoever (mind control for example; or what those crazy witched did to you, that was priceless :) ). Not saying he shouldn't do anything with monster girls ever again, he even said he wants to do it again sometime, which is great. But for this project, I'd prefer it to be primarily a game with a female protagonist getting into all sorts of sexy situations.

      I consider the idea of a strong protagonist who acts like a realistic person being sold to a clan of bandits much hotter than an army of random moe-blobs with monster limbs raping my male avatar. I consider having a different scene, where she is eaten by a monster that impregnates girls in its stomach much better variability than saying "A-ha! Look, she is not a harpy, she's a phoenix harpy! See? Her body looks slightly different and they're having sex in a different position."

      Really sorry if I sounded too harsh, I certainly did not mean to. Not meaning to offend you, whatever floats your boat. I just would not bind a large project with potentially limitless possibilities to the concept of monster girls.

    3. I understand completely but then there's the moment of me not liking vore, so that scene you pictured wouldn't quite appeal to me. I actually considered this which is why I noted that humans inhabit this world too so basically without saying "there's this, this, this and this" and looking like it's trying too hard, it actually makes sense to have this fantasy setting where humans can pick on humans for their own selfish reasons but there's also the danger of "wild monsters" out there too whilst characters travel. So in a situation where you really don't want to fuck a monster girl, that would basically give you motivation to play a game properly in order to see where human scenes can be found where as someone who likes a certain thing would purposely try getting themselves into situations on purpose, as quickly as they can.

      The other scenario (or update) was one I mentioned a little later saying that (with time(a lot of time depending)) you could choose what species your character is, and ultimately the choice of what you're into is still up to you at that point.

      Also I completely see what you mean with the Phoenix Harpy comment but I was using an example and meant that these things can lead to entirely different situations (i.e. much harder Boss Fights, Higher Rewards or even Cross-Breeding monster girls if it ever got incredibly so complex) so it's more to do with world building than it is just more unique animations.

    4. I am also not into "true" vore with digestion and stuff, but do find it appealing if the girls clothes dissolve due to the acid and something sexual happens. I would disagree with someone who'd suggest a game centered around vore as much as your proposal with monster girls.

      I also think I'd find harpies a much better enemy in an H-game that is not entirely centered around monster girls. Makes them much more special that way, compared to what they'd be if they were just one in the line of cute girl-like enemies.

      Considering changing the species of the PC, well, I'd answer but I think an Anonymous answering to the last post above you gave a long enough rant why a single main character is a good idea.

      There's a reason why most popular H-games have female protagonists. Most of us are into humans girls. If you like monster girls, cool, and yes, this fetish should be somehow covered, but not as the main focus of the game that can be much more. :)

    6. @anon above me. Tentacles can represent total control over the girl, no wonder many people find it appealing. Monster girls on the other hand can lead right into some uncanny valley business, since they keep some sexy humanoid parts while adding parts that I would not look for in a mate (fox example, I'm not into snakes, horses and so forth). Some can handle it well and create something ugly-cute (like most of Eroico girls), but if you literally replace a whole lower half with a horse... no. Nope. Not ever. Nope.

  14. I love it when the sex is integrated into the game-play instead of just happening as GOR when you loose all health.

    I also don't think getting into sexual situations in a dungeon should have no negative effect on the protagonist.

    If you indeed decide to go for it and create a rogue-lite, you could do it so each time the protagonist orgasms, she starts losing higher percentage of health to enemy attacks, since she's probably shaken. Sort of an orgasm counter if you will ^___^

    And if she comes too many times, she loses as if she lost all health. That way you could have some easily avoidable enemies, who if they manage to catch you however, literally fuck the protagonist silly until Game Over, since they don't give her a chance to escape.

I know I do love the idea of a rouge-like, especially cus a majority of H-games are the GOR that you end up playing the same level over and over, just to die to different enemies (and forbid if they have a directional death needed such as enemy approaching from behind too). Least in my mind when I think rouge I also think randomly generated levels, enemies, items and such, not just a 1 death and start over.

    4. Like what Kyrieru said, the orgasm thing could be interesting as a way of increasing risk vs reward. In Darkest Dungeon, you have a torch that gets dimmer as you explore a dungeon. The dimmer the torch becomes, the more difficult fighting becomes but you also get more and better treasure. That style of system could be interesting for a roguelike h-game.

    If we can express ideas, here is my:
    I've been tired of the system "If you down - be raped". After all it's - the most common system in the hentai game. Is it possible in this new game option where the heroin - sex agressor. I mean, she initiates sex act at her own will. Her reasons... I don't know for sure, but maybe she is some sort of succubi or souleater... or whatever. I know my idea maybe stupid, but I just had to make it at least =_=

    1. Hmmmm, your idea is interesting. I think it could work really well if it was story driven and stealth based so it's not just about raping random dudes and could also have cool defeat scenes. Maybe a smaller game first? ^.^ The story could be about collecting semen from desirable men for rich female customers. ^.^

  17. I suggest to use a universe with time-travel, space-travel and/or parallel universes,
    so you aren't bound to one theme and are free to go places.

    This would also allow you to parody other's work without it being out of place.

    Maybe you could choose a theme per month, or even week.
    I think that would really fit this type of game.

    2. Expanding: keep most enemies confined to a specific room or set of rooms, divided up by the particular fetish they cater to. Maybe start out in a hub level and you get to decide which "world" to visit from there.

I'd much prefer if instead of a hub and going places, it was a dungeon that changed after each few floors (with shortcuts available so you don't have to go through levels 1 and 2 to get to level 3 once you got there, if you don't want to). Would add a level of mystery to that whole place, if it gradually changed from a cave inhabited just by some bandits to a stranger and much more evil place, bent on violating the heroine in strangest ways. For example the chapters in Binding of Isaac are what I mean. There could be like three levels of caves with slight differences in content between them, and then BLAM, something totally different.

      I'd also play it for the challenge of trying to complete all floors in one run ^_^

  19. I wouldn't mind seeing a game that let's you completely customize a girl with the express intent of putting her into a simple H-Scene. Games that let you create your own, personal waifu are hard to come by (at least in my experience). Maybe the idea with this one is patreon subscribers can pitch what kind of feature they'd like to see implemented for the girl? I dunno.
    Not all good H-Games need to be 2D side-scrollers or dating sims.

  22. This is an interesting way of doing things, however I feel you may be jumping the gun. Even working and adding one sprite at a time is going to take work. To co-work on that, while working on other game, as well as deal with personal problems that arise as well as the daily ones may be too much to handle at once. Seeing you work this past year has shown that you like to be a perfectionist. Working on a game, such as one where people pay you weekly or monthly to do, may not work out. While you can always sit back and just leave a post "Pause" or talk about something that has happened, people(and by people, I mean the folks that are paying the Patreon) can get angry. Until you can sort out the animations, and get on a schedule where you comfortably know you are able to easily complete these tasks(drawing the sprite, animating the sprite, adding the sprite to the game, dispensing the game to the players, fixing bugs that arise(there will always be bugs), adding a patch to the game, releasing the patch to the players.(Which brings up another question. How will you add elements to the game. Will players need to download a patch, or even a brand new game each week/month, or will it be automatically updated into the game.)

    Do you feel you would be able to comfortably create and add new sprites/animations each week/month or even new areas, without having the problem of the frustration at it not looking how you want or being quite what you imagined?

    Changing over to a game is a big gamble, and as said earlier, I feel it would be best if you waited a few months or even longer. At the very least until you can get the weekly/biweekly sprite animations back in order. While some people can understand that problems and plans can go haywire, there are several out there who would instead freak out over it, and if people wont pay on the patron if you start releasing more threads and topics about things going wrong or delays in adding content because of 'insert reason here'.

    Let me make myself clear. I am not attacking you or calling you out here. You are in all rights one of the better sprite game makers, and on top of that, you do it entirely by yourself (voice actors aside). Swapping the animations over to a game Patreon when the animations are already in such disarray though I feel would be a bad move at current time. If and when you do swap, I recommend you release the content Bi-Weekly(or every other week) rather then weekly. "Once it's playable, I'll basically do a test run for two weeks, so that we'll know what kind of content I could do in 8 hours a week."(-Kyrieru.) With only 8 hours a week, it may not be enough for sprite, map, animation, bug fixes, SFX, player skills, player attacks/weapons, and any additional side work that needs to be done(Lighting, shading, sketching, planning, and adding physics(Where needed). 16 weeks per content release would give you more time, allowing you to not rush anything on it, as well as review everything before it reaches the players. This would also help give your mind a break, as going over the Patreon game, going over noa, and lastly dealing with the people who constantly bombard you with messages(often repeating the same thing over and over, for which I apologize if anything types here is a repeat of previous messages, questions, etc.)

    As for any ideas to add to the game. Whatever makes you happy in the end. Just don't let this game get out of control.

      -Just to clarify. By gamble, I mean this could work out, get you money, and help you greatly with experience as well as give you something to dump anything you want to do with a game and cannot into, however it can lead you to destruction by overloading the amount of work that you are already doing, and add needless pressure to yourself.
      In the end, my recommendation to do Bi-Weekly, or even Monthly, updates instead of just every week.
      (One week gives eight hours to work. Two weeks gives 16. Three weeks gives 24. Four weeks will give you 32 hours. From here, you can desire on how much can be added by what time frame, and stay working at that. Don't start trying to add more or do more unless you are sure you have enough time.)

      For those of you who did not read the giant paragraph(I swear that looked much shorter when I typed it) the times were taken from prior post multiplied by each added week. "so that we'll know what kind of content I could do in 8 hours a week."(-Kyrieru)

  23. All games with clothing damage always made me wonder how come all replacement clothes you find look the same as the original outfit. Maybe all you could find in a dungeon are rags to replace your top or bottom, but if you lost your panties you'd be forced to go commando.

  26. How about sexy full body portraits for the MC during dialogue and maybe holding fan art competitions for portraits of minor characters, and if the winner you decide matches your style you'd use it in-game and not lose your time on it? :)

  27. Modular development would go well with some sort of mission based game. Something akin to the Mega Man Zero games if side scrolling is the goal. Some sort of central hub 'base' that allows for various missions, scenarios, and characters. The best part about this approach would be the world building aspect that could eventually take on a life of its own.

    4. I've been following this blog a long time, Kyrieru. I *know* you'll be switching over to a Patreon game. I would too, if I had the audience for it. Working on interesting new things for a game every week beats the relatively thankless work of polishing up a 5 second H-animation for 12 hours a week. ;P

      I started doing it because I need practice animating for my main game. You don't need the practice, so I can see why you'd want to switch over to working on a game instead.     4. The problem with that is that Kyrieru isn't lying. I'm sure he legitimately thinks "hell yeah, I'm gonna get this shit done by Wednesday!" when he tells us this stuff. Then he gets bored/depressed/feels sick/gets busy/whatever, and plans change. It's not ideal, but I can't be too mad at him when he says "sorry, I was procrastinating," at least. Since the animations are free, he doesn't really owe them to us, anyway.

      Iirc, though, he DOES owe his patreon backers a few pixel art tutorials, as well as an extra animation or two. He really should get on finishing those, in my opinion. Try your best, Kyrieru! =(

  33. Like someone above mentioned, I'd suggest making it two weeks. That way, you won't run into as many situations where you have to choose between meeting the schedule and doing something right, and if a good idea beyond the basic systems of the game comes up, you'll have time to pursue it while working on the normal content.
    It might not seem necessary at first, but it's an insurance policy, if anything else. At the beginning you'd be more free to experiment, and, if you wanted, your schedule would be open enough that at the end you could flow straight into starting a new game as you put the finishing touches on the Patreon one.
    But hey, I'll follow this either way.

    Also, do you have a favorite out of this vote, and why is it Curly?

    5. Yeah, but normally a delayed game is like a construction of a building that was delayed to build it properly. Games in development hell like Duke Nukem are buildings that are left by the construction company entirely, picked up by a totally different construction company with a different idea about what the building should look like and then demolition-ed completely to start all over again. See the difference? ^^

  35. My input for your Pateon game is, that I'd also like a rogue-lite with some randomly generated levels (to what level randomly generated is up to you, I just like playing roguelikes where it's different everytime you play).

    Also, enemies and traps are not the only things to fill the levels with. For example, you could have dungeon shop where it's possible to shoplift, but if you get caught, the shopkeep is very strong (as is tradition in these games) and has some perverted stuff set up for naughty girls who try to steal for him ^_^ Some objects could be interactable and have random effects - in some magic themed levels, there could be potions lying around that could one time restore your health a bit, another time they could cause heavy lactation, another time maximize the protagonists horniness. If you had a bottle on you and you got lactation, you could collect the milk and use it on some object or enemy in the game to get an additional scene. And so on. Just some ideas, surely you can come up with better ones

    1. Damn straight! Also I always like when there are some secrets in these games. To go along with your example, the milk could open a secret entrance spawning only on a certain floor. This entrance would lead to a hidden floor, revolving around breast expansion, lactation and milking, with some items and enemies found only there :)
