Maybe

Good day, perhaps.

I might be working on a form of media at some point today. The protagonist is a male/female inanimate/living person/object who may or may not interact with other such entities. No promises.

This might be a screenshot.

Not of the form of media as it will be when it might be released, but what it is now, or rather what it was when I took the screenshot, if that's even what it is. I can't say for sure...they are watching..the semantic snipers....

Anyhow, I think I'm hungry (when I wrote this), so I'm going to try and go eat lunch. No promises.

That out of the way, I "will" not be refraining from talking about plans in the future. This is a dev journal, that's the point. However I "will" try and refrain from saying "will", because apparently some people interpret a development journal as a form of legal document. "May" and "might" are all the rage these days.

In other news, here's what needs to be done before the game reaches a minimum amount of completion. (not talking about a demo)
- 2 or 3 more H-enemies
- 5 non-H enemies
- 3 bosses
- 3 songs
- 2 areas
- 4 small tilesets
- 4 destroyable props
- 3 animated CGs
- Re-implement options screen from previous game
- Gallery
- Non-permanent powerups
-The sound design for all of the above.

At this point, the "framework" of the game is done, outside of minor powerups, and now it's just a matter of adding the rest of the content. Getting to this point is generally the most time consuming, because it involves the most programming and design oriented problems. It may not be much more work theoretically, but generally I'm more productive when creating things from scratch, as opposed to trying to get something to work for the majority of a day.

The only thing that will still require more attention is the bosses, since they generally behave differently than other enemies, or have more complicated patterns.

No ping pong bosses this time, I swear -__-

    3. Um... that's what I said. He won't be >releasing< the demo.

    4. I said the demo would be ready for release. Which it was. I decided not to release it.

It's semantics because I make plans. I say what I intend to do. When you tell someone you're going to go upstairs to get something, you don't say "I "might" go upstairs to get something" You kind of a assume that should you change your mind, the other person isn't going to freak out.

    5. yes but if you're paid to go upstairs to get something, and you decide not to go but instead dick around downstairs for a couple of months, then the other person should call you out on it

      Delete
    12. That's paying me "when" I do something, not "to" do something.

If people were paying me $30,000 before the game was finished, you can bet your ass I'd be obligated to finish it on time.

      Delete
    13. so even though people (me included) bought your last two games, and are thus supporting you financially, you don't feel any sort of obligation to them?

GUESS I WONT BE BUYING YOUR SHIT NO MORE CHIEF. thats okay, i'm sure a few customers don't matter in the h game business. which is not at all an incredibly niche market.

    14. If I buy a hamburger from a store, I don't expect the company to be obligated to meeting my expectations from then onward. I paid for a product, and I received a product. Their only obligation is to helping if I have a problem with said product. Which I do, on a regular basis.

If you only bought my games to support me, then fine, I appreciate it. However that doesn't mean I'm suddenly obligated to meet your expectations for the rest of my career. If you thought you were buying shares in a company, then sorry, but that's not how it works. If you don't want to buy my games anymore as a result, that's your decision.

    8. @aggro-anon: Your self-entitled whining is your opinion. Opinions are like assholes: having one doesn't make you special, nor does it give you a right to shit on others. Freedom of speech? Entitled to an opinion? If the only support for your little tantrum is that it's not illegal to express, then you'd have to be a special kind of horrible...

...The kind of horrible who'd kill your spouse in a hit and run then sue you for the damages; damages to a car that they threw a tantrum over being the wrong color, when they got it from their mommy as a gift.

Honestly, not having whatever sorry woman birthed that mutant get her credit card charged for another game kinda balances it out... actually, they probably stole the game, rather than the card on which to buy it, given how deep-seated their self-entitled mentality is.

......but I'd also like to ask whether you have any strategies based around it. Does this mean that some monsters have multiple attacks, some of which need to can be dodged by crouching?

      Delete
    3. Yeah, Crouching matters a lot more in this game than it did in Eroico.

Well, Eroico's crouch was a block, so I suppose that's different.

  8. Can't you just remove the option for Anons to comment? I know you're not too bothered but I'm sure you're aware that they're saying shitty things because they have something to hide behind. I'd probably have to make an account on here sooner or later anyway because I love your stuff so much.

Anyway, you're not an official team of developers or anything and you make these things because you can, so I don't get why people are acting as if you HAVE to keep by your word otherwise you'll lose your job or something. I know you're NOT saying anything concrete but you're technically self-employed or whatever so why should you even have to respond to arse-holes digging at your throat all the time?

Also, I think it's great that you try your best every day not to procrastinate and work on stuff. This is good but don't get too frustrated with anything. As an artist I'm sure you'll know this but when you make something and don't like it: Do NOT throw it away. Work on it until the end because seeing old things in comparison next to new things is one of the best motivators you could get!

Be hard on yourself but make it a tough-love rather than just negativity. We all know just plain negative substance won't make anyone feel better on anything.

    1. To be honest, I've actually found the opposite with certain things. I find that I'll often spend too much time trying to fix a sprite, when I would be better off starting from scratch. I think that's why sketches and rough work is so important.

With games, on the other hand, I've never abandoned a project because I thought it was bad. They've mostly been for other reasons. Too large scale, too high res graphics, too much unfamiliar territory (story). And with the most recent one, I did it because I need to make a game to ensure that I'm financially safe, and I plan on returning to it.

Basically what he's trying to make us see without actually saying anything is to not give a fuck about this blog since all the information in it is really maybe just for him because nothing he says he might do means that he may do anything at all. Technically, this blog serves no real purpose other than basically granting him a sense of completion and keeping his own records of his work perhaps but most likely. This journal means nothing really as anything in it may not even happen because there is no legal guarantee. He's already lost by making such a post because technically he just showed that we got to him maybe. No one cares what the game is up to and what may or may not happen. Release the game, or shut up. This blog is for casual updates on progress, plans, talking about game design, receiving feedback, discussion, answering questions, among other things. If you honestly think that it's pointless, or that people don't care, frankly you aren't really paying much attention to what people think around here. 7. I insulted you because I think you run your job horribly, but I'm a fan of your work. I figure I owe it to you to at least say "hey, I think you're being a jackass" when I think you're being a jackass. That doesn't mean I want to spend an hour combing through all your old posts to demonstrate to you why you're running your blog badly, though, especially since I think (based on how you talk to people here, and nothing else, obviously) to shut your ears off as soon as anyone criticizes you. I'd like you to understand why you're in the wrong here (imo), but I feel like it'd be a wasted effort. Hence my earlier question: if you were wrong, would you really want to know?

      Delete
    8. Edit: "run your job" should read "run your blog." "to shut your..." should be "you shut your ears off." Stupid phone, sorry.

      Delete
    9. Of course. Why do you think I'm responding to almost every person here? I want to see if anybody can actually back up what they're saying for once. I've heard the following claims,

      I lie about deadlines.
I just make announcements to get self satisfaction from fans.
      I'm lazy.
      I don't care about fans
      Etc.

And guess what? Nobody has had a single compelling argument to back up their claims. All I've heard thus far are assumptions and speculation. So yes, be my guest. Convince me.

If you think it's a waste of your time, then fine, don't waste it. But sarcastic insults with nothing to back them up don't help anyone.

    12. Quote: I figure I owe it to you to at least say "hey, I think you're being a jackass"

So you 'owe it to someone' to act like a total jackass, then? That makes less sense than claiming that you 'owe it to someone' at a funeral to tell them that 'they deserved it'. Not only is it inappropriate in both timing and tone, it's also complete bullshit. Rather than attempt to give any civil debate on whether something's right or wrong, you instead waste everyone's time with this braindead, baseless flaming.

When your "things to do" and "deadlines you meet" involve drinking from toilets and inbreeding (actually, I apologize, that was cruel-- I should know better than to think someone that abrasive could even get their sibling), though, I suppose that makes you the most qualified person in the world to critique the work schedule of one of the -only- people who makes games of in this genre of even remotely this quality.

I mean what the actual fuck is wrong with these bitchy trolls? Are they too preoccupied with sucking themselves off (because clearly, they're also spineless) to see the shit that's coming out of their keyboards, here? Seriously, are the League of Legends or Call of Duty servers down? Is there a worldwide Cheetoes shortage? 'Cuz I can't see where these pests are coming from, but I'm monumentally sick of them giving us a bad name.

    1. I was working towards a demo, and people have said multiple times that they like seeing real-time progress. So did just that. There's no deeper meaning to it.

Once I finished the demo, I got people to play test it. Based on their feedback, I went on to balance it, but decided that fixing what I saw as problems wouldn't be good enough. Thus the title of my last post "balancing, falling over"

Did that disappoint people? Yes. Do I care about fans? Of course. But I'd much rather people be disappointed that there's no demo than be disappointed with what's there. I want them to enjoy it as much as possible, and first impressions in games are important, especially when you only get it once.

      Delete
    2. You're fucking dense man. You want people to enjoy the demo as much as possible? The hell? It's MEANT to be disappointing, in a sort of bittersweet way, like "aw man it's over already? I guess I gotta buy the full game then!"

Also, 100% of everyone here would expect you to update the demo upon release. All of us would know that this isn't the final product. And you claim the framework of the game is done? Well, nobody's expecting anything more than that. Just a little preview of basic gameplay.

But no, you have to give us bullshit excuses like ooooohhhhhh i didn't feel like it captured my artistic vision just yet. the folks at BAFTA might deride me for not releasing a demo which featured no monster on loli action

  22. Just waiting to get the voice clips for the main character now. Once I get those I'll be ready to release the first demo.

The voice actress finished recording the sounds, now I just need to sort through them all.

I'll have to make any necessary edits, and then export them individually. There are around 80+ to go through. Then I need to load them into GM, etc. Once that's done, the demo will be ready.

Well, the demo is at a stage where it could be played mostly normally, with the exception of a few areas being blocked off. However I still don't think it's ready yet.

Honestly I think this will be the last time I plan on releasing a demo before the game is done.

I'm considering just forgoing the early demo and just proceeding with the rest of the game until it's done, because making a polished area only to have to redo parts of it later is a pretty big waste of time.

The demo is done in the state I had planned to release it in. The first person to play-test it was Uriel.

However if you want to continue to make baseless assumptions, be my guest. They have no effect on the outcome of my work or my "motivation".

Hell, I know most people wouldn't really mind if the demo was just a room with an enemy in it. I know I wouldn't, if I was playing someone else's game. But your perspective is pretty different when that game is something you want to be proud of.

    Oh don't worry, they're coming -__-

"Don't worry about it, just work on the game, we can wait"
and "You are a disappointment and you should kill yourself you pathetic excuse for a game dev."

    Etc.

If you know what will happen stop the cycle of your posts..

And so it begun. You can see how you lure, lure, lure, get everyone excited... then FUCK YOU GUYS. lol!

It's not good enough for ME. I want to PROUD of it. It was ready for the release I WANTED, but after looking at it again, it's not something I can be PROUD of.

Very arrogant. That's why this backlash is happening. You deserve it.

    2. Yes, the game was "in the state I planned to release it in" BEFORE it was playtested. I achieved what I was working towards, and it was "ready" to release it. Only after having that result tested by play-testers did I decide that that it wasn't enough, based on the feedback.

It's really not that complicated. Arrogance would have been assuming it was great despite the feedback.

    3. If you were getting no updates or info at all, you'd just be throwing a tantrum over that instead, Blaine. The transparency of things like that is why people don't take you seriously. Would YOU care about the opinion of someone you'll clearly never make happy anyway?

  23. Take as long as you want, man. A good game may be good for a few jerks, but a quality game provides entertainment for much longer, on a much deeper level. They're usually harder, too.

  26. I admit I am a tad confused after reading some of these comments. Either its insults over silly things or making fun of us "yes men" lol. I admit, I rarely have anything bad to say, though I share my disappointment however at delays but guess I am not in such a rush to see nude pixels...I guess? Sure, I could get mad and call you lazy and say your a horrible time management but as stated your not obligated to appease us. Besides I'd wager you know better than anyone of us here what the penalty is for not releasing another product in time.

Anyway, all in all. Good luck on the work

  28. Kyrieru, I love your work and your openness. It's unfortunate to see so many people getting upset over the regular setbacks. I imagine this reaction is one of the reasons most development studios are very cautious and secretive about their progress. A lot of people don't realize how much backtracking and revision there is when making a video game. No one can be expected to get it right the first time every time. That said, it wouldn't hurt to put more effort into conveying that everything you talk about during your development on this blog is a work in progress and not necessarily always indicative of your actual timeline or completed project.

Keep up the good work and don't let these rough responses effect your progress or drive for excellence. I look forward to your future posts.

  29. Yikes, if blogger gave out money for clicks or if this website had ads, Kyrieru would of been able to go back to making his other game already.

  30. That's the same fucking shaft of light. That's going to be in every single one of his games, isn't it. :|

  31. Oh man, I did not expect to see this kind of drama for an h-game. No place on the internet is safe. xD

Also, I haven't read all the comments, but you're keeping a good attitude going, Kyri. Good show. :3

  32. I take solace in the fact that, as the internet loses more and more privacy, someday in the forseeable future, we'll always know who has posted, anywhere. When these screeching trolls have their mothers, whom they inevitably are waited on hand and foot by from their hut-lair in her bed, being sent constant death-threats for her abomination of a child, I imagine they'll start being fed bleach.

  35. Well it's been a month since he abandoned the last game. Anyone remember the reason? Oh, right, "i can't finish it in a month". Well, he still hasn't finished this one either.

I think the evidence is there, you know, in the pattern. The guy just abandons way too many projects. I've seen a couple of indie devs act this way, the only difference is that it was a hobby to them, so they had the luxury of treating it as such.

I really don't give a shit either way. I can wait, IF it ever comes out. I just hope he realizes that needlessly cramming shit into games and/or abandoning them is not a hallmark of a good designer.

    1. out of all things, the project abandonment was the most disappointing part of this whole controversy. i can wait all year for one of kyrieru's games, as long as it isn't left unfinished to collect dust.

    2. And once again, someone has no idea what he's talking about.

OP, I never said "I can't finish it in a month". I said it makes me weary of "the coming months". As in, I don't know how long it would have taken. The fact that I'm so far through this game in a month tells me that I made the right decision.

Get your facts straight next time.

    3. I remember what you said, but you know, semantics. I can understand if you're incapable of completing the because of monetary problems. Making a shorter, simpler game would then be the right call.

However, you said you could DEFINITELY complete the game before the month's up. So why not? I mean, you're taking your sweet time with this new game as well. I guess you weren't in much of a bind after all? And you're repeating the same mistakes again, needlessly adding stuff into the game. Maybe you should plan out your game designs in the future.

      Heh, "plan".

  36. Lol the rage over an hgame is so funny i love it, not even a full game just the demo. Your next game should be about a girl that makes h games and blogs about them, and when she misses a few dead lines the anons rage and try to rape her and her go is to stealthy sneak out of the city mgs style lol

    1. I know, right?

Kyrieru, why don't you make a small break? Waking every morning up with the toughts :"Now I must make good effort" isn't healthy. Just stop for one/two weeks working on the game, play some (H-) flashgames, eat an apple (or an tomato for your hemoglobin-problem ;) ) and start again

      Small steps are best steps

I don't know about any of you, but even if I like coding, I start to literally feel sick if I had to face it non-stop for more than 2 days (e.g. cramming it for deadline, professor gave a huge task despite short time span, etc)
