Started a Twitter account

I started a Twitter account on a whim today, in order to respond to someone.
https://twitter.com/Kyrieru

So, I figure I may as well use it. Perhaps I'll use it for all the random small stuff that doesn't really fit in here. I'll have to check twitter's terms of service for adult content though..

  1. I don't think Twitter cracks down on pornography much. If anything the Japanese just have to censor their stuff because of their own laws.

And holy shit, the guy who drew for Heroine Hunting is following you already?

    1. Ohh, I see. He's the one you had to reply to.

    2. A shit ton of long standing accounts have been getting taken down for porn/nudity for a while now. Not worth it.

      Delete
    3. I mean, the worst they could do is take down the twitter account. But that would be the same as not using it.

  2. All porn is OK, as long as you enable "Mark media I tweet as containing material that may be sensitive" :)

    1. Looking at the terms, it specifically says that it doesn't allow porn, but then, I've seen a lot already so I can't imagine that it's enforced.

      Delete
    2. As far as I know they don't allow actual real life porn, but artistic porn is permitted. There are lots of eastern and western artists posting porn (even uncensored) on twitter, they just mark their posts as sensitive content

    3. Then it's probably for copyright reason in case shit like BangBros or whatever is posted.

  3. I never ever wanted to mess with twitter....*sigh*...now I have to.

  4. Twitter doesn't care. No really, I can guarantee it. I could link you over a hundred Twitter accounts with only uncensored porn pictures and/or videos on them. Not because I save those or am into that kind of thing, but because they're super easy to find with generic google searches along with the word: "Twitter".

  5. Alas, I would follow you but the social stigma is too much to bear. Hope you have a good time though, just be wary of all the rash 140 character opinions and reposts.

  6. I've had a lot of followed Japanese H artists randomly deleted from my list, accounts permanently suspended for posts they made years ago with hentai pictures. Safe to say, twitter WILL ban you for Hentai pictures, even when your settings are checked for "sensitive material". Whether they were reported for it en mass or because twitter threw a fit I don't know...

    1. That's weird. Tons of people make Twitter accounts specifically to post their H artwork and they're fine. Maybe it's a matter of some particular type of lewds, like loli for example?

      Delete
    2. Could depend on whether it's censored or not, too. If the accounts originate/post from Japan, Twitter might be trying to play nice with the government by getting rid of them.

Or, y'know, bad luck in happening to be found. Wouldn't put it past them to have staff go on search and destroy missions periodically to keep up appearances.

      Delete
    3. Nah, loli isn't being witch hunted at the moment, many lolicon artists are still on twitter even after the purge and even so, some of the artists never did loli-ish characters. I don't recall if most of the images were censored or not.

Some accounts were even from eroge companies like Lose. Manga artists like Fatal pulse. And in general, free artists that do their own thing like abubu were indiscriminately erased. They're back now with different account names, not sure if you can find their old accounts anymore I deleted that off my history already. This happened back in 2015 and they haven't attacked anyone since, but who knows when it'll happen again, and for what reason.

  9. Completely random question, are you allowed to make porn games with game maker? I looked at what lewdgamer said about the EULA changing and now i'm confused....

    1. I believe they're referring to removing games from the YYG store. They don't have the power to remove anything else, beyond court action.

Also, even if they said you cant make porn games, my response to that would be something along the lines of "Do it anyway"

      Delete
    2. They realistically can't enforce it, even if it's in the EULA.

Such an action would be deemed unconstitutional. I imagine they have it there just so they can say "well we told them not to, but they did it anyway", if the shit ever hit the fan.

Seriously, can you imagine if an art supply vendor said "you can't paint naked women with our paint brushes or canvas as it's objectifying women!". That art supply store would quickly go out of business in the worse possible way.

The only reason game engine makers can get away with making statements like that, is because games are a relatively new art medium.

      /rant

      Delete
    3. I mean...they can do whatever they want since they made the software, it just comes down to how strong the backlash/lack of caring is. Not unconstitutional (barely means anything now anyway), not to mention the differences in laws regarding this stuff between countries.

Weirdly enough, Minecraft is a good example here. The drama with what servers can monetize was huge, but given time the community slowly bent in their favor; the company/game itself now has a server blacklist, but leaves up servers which break the EULA due to their popularity, and the backlash that shutting them down would cause.

...I'd say that GameMaker won't enforce theirs, but, y'know, already seen how that goes. They might do it after testing the waters with this.
No emergency now, but the adult game community isn't exactly public enough to cause a scene if it goes south, so maybe creators should start moving away from the platform.

      Delete
    4. A business can choose to ignore their license agreement as long as both parties consent. Seeing as the producer produced content against the EULA, their consent is implied.

      Delete
    5. Yea, that was the point. They can ignore their own EULA if they choose, and they have incentive to do so due to the popularity of the other party, and the bad press that shutting them down would cause.
With GM and adult games, though, the audience isn't large/outspoken/willing enough to be public for it to matter. If they wanted to, they could shut out that part of the business without much negative impact, and get a PR boost at the same time with more general audiences.

They're already pushing this community out of their more public services, so...this doesn't seem like a good situation.

      Delete
    6. The small audience is also a huge benefit since it keeps eyes out. This is why criminal rings and such keep a small user base.

There's also the risk of permanently driving their audience away and never attracting new audiences - and that's a huge risk to take.

I really wouldn't worry too much; GameMaker is probably more concerned with whether you bought the software or pirated it than what type of games you're making with it. They're also more interested in what you can do with it so they can improve the software for the next paid version.

    2. I know it has to do with the gamepad functions in GM, because the keys you mentioned are the only ones in the game handled by keyboard functions alone. I "think" I fixed this in my latest variations of my control code, and I'll be updating Kurovadis and Eroico with it.

What OS are you running? Keyboard? Motherboard/BIOS information (probably won't need that, but it's worth a look). We will need to know if it's an issue with the software itself or if it's how these particular games are ran by your OS.

      Delete
    5. Shit, just actually remembered something about this from years ago. You may have a keylogger which will cause massive lag when playing a game as the software tries to record the hundreds of wasd's you send its way.

Also, some anti-viruses mis-map key presses when it suspects a keylogger is being employed, so while you're pressing d to move right, the game thinks you're retarded and pressing / for some reason.

  19. Hi. Concerning the recent poll on your twitter: How low res are we talking? I'd also prefer complex with lower res, but with higher res than the mugen animations...

    1. https://i.gyazo.com/abf7970d6abd00edc4cab59e142dbcb2.png

Here's a 1:1 comparison of some sprite sizes (with the current WIP of a smaller sized miku). As you can see, even the "high res" style is pretty small. However, with sprites as small as the Miku one I could basically tell a short story, doing a series of scenes rather than just one the way I am now.

Also, mugen H-animations aren't really known for being high quality -__-

      Delete
    2. Thanks.

Yeah I know, I don't like them all that much, which is why I asked. Some of them are long, so I was afraid that could be the direction it could go in a bad scenario.

      Delete
    3. Mmm.

Basically, when I say a series of scenes, I mean sceenes with the animation quality of the higher res ones (smooth, secondary animation, stages, etc), but with the ability to do things like more redrawn poses, or multiple scenes, with the time I save doing it in a lower res.

      Delete
    4. Are the new Noaika sprites around the same size as that Miku?

  20. Working on a game and need advice. Would you recommend a terrible artist hire someone or get good?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Depends how bad you are, and what kind of game you're trying to make. If you're making a simple low res H game, you may as well start trying to learn, since working alone has a lot of advantages.

If you're trying to make something high quality, then you have to be good at your job yourself, otherwise no good artist is going to want to work with you at the promise of a split in profits. Otherwise, you'll need a lot of money for a good artist, or you'll have to look for an artist at a lower skill level, who's willing to work at it as a hobby project.

    6. It stands for Generated.

It's been used in movies, mostly; a hollywood term for the phase of post-production / 'CG Editing'... refers to editing the computer generated side of the effects. Like Lord of the Rings had a huge cg phase.

So yes. It stands for computer generated. No idea how the term got segwayed into the 'Still drawings' world for pornography games.

  32. He is far from being "the" G. R. R. Martin of H-games. There are multiple other H-game and H-art projects I know of that didn't meet their planned deadlines - surely more than than the opposite.

  33. I personally like the big sprites but unfortunately I doubt Kyrieru will ever use them again outside of his little mini animations

    ReplyDelete
  34. I really just wonder what could possibly be taking this much of your time towards making that game. Are you disgusted with us and lost the desire to show your work? Have you lost motivation in the long project you undertook? Is the game simply that large, that it requires this massive amount of work and patience to complete? I'm not angry, I'm not bitching. Thankfully, others like Zell999 and Triangulate Pixels and Vosmug have sprung up to kinda sooth out the urges, but their work is nothing like yours. Not saying yours is better, just that yours has it's own style. I'm a little sad to see this, but I hope this game is still a thing, and even if it doesn't have a release date, you can somehow complete what you wanted to make.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Triangulate is working with a team and handles the artwork only. Zell999's game isn't nearly as complex, art wise, animation wise, code wise, music wise, even compared to Kurovadis or Eroico. A game of this quality and complexity is no easy task for 1 person.

      Delete
    2. @Dink: Health issues are a big part of the problem. Other than that, it comes down to the the scope of the project (sprites three times the size of eroico, a large soundtrack, more areas, more enemies, more H-content, etc). For better or worse, Noaika has turned into more of a learning experience than a normal dev cycle; I spend a lot of time learning about certain things and trying to find future-proof solutions, rather than just doing something quick and dirty (those are the things that end up screwing me over later, in the past).

When it comes to showing work; as I've said in the past, I want people to go into the game with 0 expectations. I don't blame those who get frustrated with me or dont believe that, though.

That said, the game is still in development, and it will eventually be released.

@anon: It's not that difficult, but it can be time consuming, especially from square one. Luckily for me (and my audience), my games probably won't ever take as long as Noaika has after this. You only need to learn how to do a lot of stuff once, and from then on it becomes more about using it. It's kind of funny looking at how many more scripts I have at my disposal now, compared to Eroico.

    3. @Kyrieru Just promise me you won't let hate posts (like the one a few scrolls up) affect your motivation or let it stifle your passion for games (design) in general.

Too many game developers have actually quit because they couldn't take the overwhelming negativity from their "fans". Learn at your own pace.

    4. Nah, stuff like that doesn't really affect my motivation. I'm generally pretty self reflective, so negativity from strangers about my life tends to just be less informed and less harsh than what I think myself. However what I think myself is through the lens of improvement, so I don't really find it disheartening.

    5. Next time you should do a minecraft/dwarf fortress and just do a rolling alpha/beta test for your games to people who pre-order. That way you can spend months/years on development and not have people constantly bitch at you for not showing any progress. You can also get feedback as you go, instead of doing a bunch of stuff and discovering it sucked afterwards.

  35. It's not like you didn't offer people a refund. It's a bummer that it's taking so long but that's all it is, don't understand why people feel so entitled to their anime porn.

  36. Mr.Kyrieru have you tried mighty number 9 yet?

  37. Saw your tweet about Mighty No.9, hopefully we won't be saying the same about Noakia :)

    2. Yeah. I read that one too. Kyrieru I'd recommend you wash away any bad taste with Shovel Knight or the latest Shantae. Your games tell me you might possibly like them.

    3. We'll see for sure when Noakia comes out~

  38. I do understand what you want when you're talking about people going into the game without expectations, but there are some things that you could probably share and not have the expectations get out of control.

Just an example would be the first time I played Kurovadis, I made it all the way to the first boss and had no idea why he was so horribly difficult. Then I realized that I could distribute stat points. I'd made it that far and never pressed start. I didn't even know I could.

Things like "there will be a pause menu" and Noa will/will not level up, and you can/can not distribute stat points.

So far, all I (think I) know about the game is:
    - The demo posted might as well be a different game
    - General sprite size is about 3x Kurovadis
    - something something maybe you can use a gun and a spear at some point
    - little robot buddies
    - bad guys of various danger levels exist

That's actually more than I thought I knew about the game, looking back. I haven't read through every comment on every post, and I missed a stream or two, so there might be more information ... somewhere.

Hmm, maybe we could all start posting blatant speculation about what the game will contain here, and Kreckman will either allow it or correct us. Checking the site daily like I do will be more rewarding that way.

    1. To be fair, I'm probably not going to be this way with all my games. One design philosophy I've sort of gained over the years is that designers should be open to allowing players the experience the game how they want (For example, I'm gonna have cheats and fps turbo built into the game). This comes in the form of options, but it also means I shouldn't force my way of experiencing media (with no spoilers) on other people. After Noa I'll probably go back to the usual way.

On the topic of the pause menu, that's actually a fault of the game's design. I could have had something as simple as a "Distribute stat points" flash in one of the corners, or even something like "Press start to level up". This would tip the player off that there's something they have to do to level up. I could have also made it so when you get an item, it automatically opens the menu and moves the icon into a slot, which would at least show you that there's a menu.

I think if a game forces the player to rely on external information or wikis, then it's failed at something.

  39. If I'm not mistaken, you said that Noaika will have more story than your previous games. Does this mean that we'll be able to learn about the alien adversaries we'll face in the game?

I figure most don't care about the settings of their porn games, but I think it would be neat.

  40. I just want to imagine if you would work for a studio that makes AAA games and they ask you do you have experience of making games, you would answer " Yes, I made 3 Adult games before." (or if you have other answers, I just want to know)

    1. I wouldn't want to work for an AAA company, honestly. I don't think I would find working with a large company satisfying compared to working alone, or with a small team.

  41. Hi kyrieru, couple of (hopefully) non-obtrusive questions:
Can you actually live comfortably working on indie games like this? Do you have to register a business to sell your games? I'm just curious is all.

    1. You have to register a business to pay sales tax. You only have to pay sales tax on copies you sell yourself, though. (Not what DLsite or other sites sell)

And yes, you can live comfortably making H games. If I were just constantly making short games like Kurovadis and Eroico, I'd be making quite a lot of money.

  42. Can you write your next tutorial about basic sprite animations? I'd like to see what you have to say about deciding how many frames to use for basic animations, such as walking, weapon attacks, jumping and so on, plus examples of typical beginners' errors and how to not commit them.

In fact, if you don't mind answering here in comments, what are your rules of thumb for deciding how many frames you use for a particular type of pixel animation?

(Is frame even the right term to use? I mean one single image on the sprite sheet by it.)

    1. Well, if you don't mind a quick reply from a stranger, I can tell you that generally you don't know how many frames something will be until you make it. However, more frames played back more quickly will always look smoother. It's mostly down to how much work you want to put in. A lot of old games have walk cycles that are only a few frames long.
Mega Man's run only has three frames. http://i.imgur.com/V3V8ZQ8.png

A good way to plan an animation is to think of the key parts of the movement (e.g. in that image: left foot forward, legs crossing, right foot forward), draw them, and then draw more between those frames for a smoother continuous motion.

Sorry if you didn't care to hear anything from some random anon, haha.

    2. Certain animations are more important than others. for example, I always give the the player more frames of animation than enemies, and of the player's animations, the running animation always has more frames than most. Basically, you want to give the player a good impression of any animations that they're going to see a lot, or any animation that they'll be fixated on, such as H animations

Other than that...as few frames as you can manage while still making it look good. While more frames generally looks better, it's a matter of diminishing returns, and more frames = more time.

Generally the way I animate with pixel art is to animate key frames, and then duplicate those frames, and edit them to do the tweens/transitions.
      https://i.gyazo.com/97b4384056333d2eda9974a2823fd31d.png

as you can see in the top part, it starts with an idle pose, he winds up, and then he punches, then he returns to the idle.

However, if we duplicate each frame and shift details around, it goes from being a choppy animation to being smoother. In other words, do the frames that show the action, then smooth them by duplicating frames where you can.

    1. I started a wiki, but I was having trouble trying to think of good terminology to use. I feel like such a format is probably a little better since I can explain minor stuff, but also have more all encompassing things that link to the smaller things.

      Delete
    2. I wouldn't worry too much about specifics in the beginning. Great thing about a wiki is that you can go back and edit anything pretty easily, once you've got the structure in place. And with that Twitter account, you could announce any changes you make without having to do a whole blog post about it.
