Oh hey

Oh hey. Nah, not dead yet.

I more or less just took a break from the blog for the month while I worked on stuff (And played some Dark Souls). However I'll always be responding to emails, especially given that it's a part of the job.

Anyhow, as for what I've been up to, here's the Curly Brace animation. I may make a few changes here and their, especially once a day has passed and I'm seeing it differently, but for now here it is.

The other thing that's been taking up my time is my attempt to redo Kurovadis's CGs, which are pretty awful, frankly. To give some examples. (click to view fullscreen)

However, some of the CGs are sort of beyond saving through minor fixes, and so I decided to do them from scratch. (And I may do the others from scratch since some of them are just kind of boring.)
Also keep in mind that the difference in size is because the the new ones are the same resolution of the game, whereas the old ones weren't.











Still not done, though. I've been having a lot of trouble making stuff I'm satisfied with, mostly because I suck at perspective. That last WIP is a good example of one that's giving me a lot of trouble. Once I get to Noaika's CGs, I'll probably take a while to just study anatomy, before attempting them, so I don't run into the same lack of experience.

Anyhow, that's what I've been up to. I'm not dead. I want to finish redoing the CGs so I can stop feeling embarrassed over the old ones. As it is I'd rather there were none at all, instead of what's there.

Other than that, I've got a bunch of stuff I've gotta do this month. I'm back to reading and responding to comments, so feel free to vent all your belated frustrations now.

      Basically whether I work on it or even finish it this month depends on how long it takes me to do the other stuff I need to do first. Manga Gamer wants to sell my games, so I want to redo the CGs relitively soon, and I still need to do stuff related to the Patreon. Noaika takes up the rest of my time.

      Yeah it has a lot of potential as a game but, as an H-game? I don't know about that. Super Deformed characters aren't very sexy.

    9. I abandoned it because I didn't find the proportions very good for H animation, and because it felt a bit to complex, when at the time I was just trying to finish something (It was before Kurovadis, I think).

      I may make a game like it, sometime, but I wouldn't re-use it's graphics, and the controls as they were are pretty stiff.

    13. Yeah, I also like it better when the H content is an aspect of the gameplay itself. Something I would've liked in a previous game would've been a fail state for giving into temptation and allowing the protag to be raped. Nothing cheap that would be frustrating, like combining it with a stun or bind or something to make it impossible to escape, but just something like a succubus/incubus where if the protag climaxes, or does so too many times, they fall under mind control or a spell or whatever for a fail state. Or a slime where climaxing makes it stronger and eventually the physical bind is inescapable for a game over. Just spit balling, I'd love to know what you think.

  6. Man that new soldier Game Over looks so good. To be honest, that was probably my favorite Game Over CG originally. Just something about it. Even though, in hindsight, yeah a penis doesn't work that way...

  8. I don't know... I liked the old ones better.
    There was a sort of "resignation" that suited the mood better instead of the "oh! god that's too big!" expression that is the standard.

    The "witch on futa" is the more representative of what I'm saying: in the original one both characters seemed surprised of what was happening, the second is your everyday "come on, say you like it!".

    Also WHY SO MUCH TENTACLES? The "doctor game over" was pretty good... now is "just another tentacle rape".

    In other news, I'm pretty pissed off that I cannot even remember when I pre-payed for Noaika (and I also had the time to forget where I saved the activation key). For a game that, in my naive vision, was supposed to be a linear, well made but simple, good Hentai Metroidvania.

    And not the fucking "Duke Nukem 3D" of hentai platformers. Man!

    1. I mean, I might agree if the originals didn't have such messed up anatomy. My problem wasn't the tone of the originals, so much as it was the stuff that was just flat out incorrect.

      The reason why I changed the docter to tentacles is because the Docter's game over animation has tentacles, he doesn't fuck her with his human body. So, I figured I'd switch it, and remove one of the other tentacle enemies in favor of a none tentacle enemy.

      As for Noaika, you can ask for a refund any time you'd like. I understand why you're frustrated, and it isn't really news that it's taking too long. I wish it were done too -__-

    2. Well, we might argue that "incorrect" is difficult to define when we are talking of a design style that dictates that eyes have to be at least 1/3 of face area. :D

      But the fact is that I value "expression" over "correctness" any time.
      And this may be the main point that is driving most of your follower mad: you may strive too much for "perfection", while we may want too much the "fun".

      But sooner or later you'll have to reach a compromise with that.

    3. The idea of something being a style only goes so far, when it comes to anatomy.
      If you can look at the first CG there and tell me that it's fine, then you're not really going to convince me that the others were fine too. There were too many problems for me.

      The only one that comes to mind is the jellyfish, is that getting removed?
      I don't know how many people share the opinion, but I liked that enemy and its CG ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      Also, big ask, I know, but are the other enemies going to get CGs? More would definitely be fan-desired but I'm not entirely sure if they'd be worth the effort from a dev perspective, considering Kurovadis is "done" and more time spent on this would be time taken away from other projects...

      Anyway, the new stuff is gorgeous, but you already knew that.

    5. It was probably one of the least terrible CGs. However there are other interesting enemies in that area that are probably a higher priority in terms of diversity.

      The reason to go back, as I've mentioned, is that Manga Gamer wants to sell it, and Kurovadis has problems that need to be addressed anyway.

      I dunno if other enemies will get CGs. Depends if making the CGs goes faster than it is or not.

      I like the new doctor, plant, and witch pics better. Insisting on vanilla human on human sex in a monster-filled fantasy sci-fi world while yawning over tentacles is several layers of silly. A witch casting a spell to change somebody's body to dominate them should have that attitude. Just because her eyes are a little wide, saying she's surprised at a spell she cast herself with the intention to fuck is nonsensical fanfic territory.

      Still, don't get too OCD when you've got a game to make.

    11. The only thing I'd say about the original witch CG is that she looks a little crazy, which kind of works. However I wont be using that trace anyway.

      But yeah, it's hard not to stress over the CGs, both because I'm constantly annoyed by my current shortcomings, and I feel like I need to do something I wont ever have to revisit.

    12. Keep in mind you were able to improve on it because you sharpened your skills working on other things. Gain another 5 art levels and you'll spot new things you could change. If you're obsessed with erasing previous flaws, the longer you put it off, the more you'll get done on all fronts. Especially when your current biggest drawback is a lack of content.

      If you do go back to Kuro, though, her ever present robo ears make me wonder if there's some unexplored cyber fetish angle. Like what redrantem does with Aile.

    13. With anatomy, there's drawing correct anatomy well, and there's drawing correct anatomy poorly, or too boring. The problem with the old CGs is that it was "incorrect" anatomy drawn awkwardly, with coloring that was passable.

      There will always be "this could be better", sure, but "I can't sell this" is a whole other level. So long as it's close enough to being correct, I don't see myself returning to it.

      Also, Man don't talk about Aile. That kind of character design is way too up my alley lol.

    2. I'm not an artist, but I know what I like, and I don't like the new images. You keep bringing up anatomy like an excuse but you know what? Of all the people I've talked to that played Kurovadis the one thing that nobody ever said was, "Yeah that game was great but the anatomy on the cg's was shit."

      You can like them all you want, but it's not up to other people to have standards as low as yours when it comes to anatomy. If you liked expressions, or the coloring, great, but that doesn't mean the anatomy wasn't a problem, and indeed one of the main problems.

    4. I would think that the relative lack of whining about it with this update shows that you've reached a good threshold. We can forgive you for not being Caravaggio. If you want to produce gallery-quality paintings then sell them on the side like the animations. So just keep doing what you're doing until the process doesn't take so much effort (in a pixel-resolution medium you'll just get diminishing returns from here).

      I'd venture to say that the only things separating you from being Paul Robertson right now are business connections, scope, and luck.

      I would also suggest you read Taming the Forum Tiger. Complaints are always going to be there, but as long as you keep them below a certain proportion of buyers you should just ignore the little nags and focus on the love of your craft. Can't please everyone.

      As for Paul Robertson, I'm not at that level yet. In terms of buisness connections and luck, though, it's more so that I'm intentionally staying small until I think I'm ready to work on mainstream stuff and branch out. The day I go on steam with a mainstream game or a dual H/censored game is the day I feel I've made a game that can stand up to scrutiny.

    Those old ones looked so terrible, especially the spider one. ESPECIALLY the spider one! They way you drew Kuro's vagina made her look like a blow up doll. That was an instance where you'd want a mosaic blur.

  16. Hey Mr.Kyrieru can I ask you something? How do you know if your pricing a game right? There this game on Dlsite. Blazingangel(http://www.dlsite.com/ecchi-eng/work/=/product_id/RE171858.html). To me it seem overprice for a side scroller and the gameplay don't seem impressive. But I could wrong break it down for me. Are they corrected and charging this price or not. I am planning on releasing a game someday. I'm not sure how to price it.

    1. There are a few ways of thinking about it.

      The first, and how I do it, is ask myself what I think my game is worth. When I made Kurovadis I thought "This game is small, low res, and simple", so I set a low price, rounded to look attractive.

      Other things to consider, are how long it took you to make the game. if it took you a month, then even with a low price you could make up the cost of development.

      Look at what else is on DLsite, in terms of quality, and avoid pricing hire than better products. Look at stuff at your skill level and set a similar price.

  18. The anatomy's definitely better, but something about the new ones just doesn't look right, particularly the first two and the last one. It might be how thin the outlines/shine lines are. The style's good, but they look flat.

    Highlighting not being finished could be a large part of why it feels that way, though.

  20. It's just my opinion, but I don't think people bought Kurovadis for the CG.
    I know I didn't.
    It's got a solid gameplay for a metroidvania indie game - and a H one to boot, nice pixel art and a really good atmosphere (I was reminded of games like Flashback in some segments).
    But mostly it's the pixel art animations. If people wanted pretty CG, they'd go to the thousands of RPG Maker games.

    I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you want to show how much you progressed and what your new standards are, just leak some NoAika screens or - one can dream - a new demo.
    Focus on what's now, and what's next.
    Kurovadis is fine.

    Keep up the good work man, looking forward to buy Noaika.

  21. The last 3 do-overs I like better. Overall I like them all better, namely because of the more pronounced pixel style. There is one thing I prefer on the first two, older images, and that's the softer looking breasts. That's more of a personal preference since I prefer smaller breasts though. I'm sure most people will prefer the new images since the breasts look bigger.

    Honestly though I'm not a big fan of CGs. I like the sprite sex best. I was disappointed that you couldn't get enough defense to survive the large monsters that eat you (enough that you could get a unique climax animation that players who didn't have enough life/defense would miss out on).

    3. People already post them on other websites, so it would just be redundant and a bad design decision. Good game endings leave you with a certain atmosphere that's meant to wrap up a general mood of the entire thing and keep it in memory. I think Kyrieru would have an aneurysm if that lasting impression were made up of crap-tier concept art.

    I think it's a good idea as practice before Noaika CGs.
    But don't forget to actually get work to be sold done, not just work for practice.
    Will you be updating the DLSite version with these as well?

    Also why pixel this time? Colouring was fine in the old CGs right?

    And for the first one, I think it's compositionally lacking.
    Maybe try redoing that one like the doctor one?

  39. Yo, Kyrieu! Love your games, just finished playing Eroico for like the....fifth or sixth time. It's just fun to play through once in a while! And Kurovadis too! Can't wait for Noaika. But I will, because, you know, what else am I gonna do? Heh.


    Anyway, just wanted to say one thing. Uh, I really like what I've seen of the new CG's for Kurovadis, ESPECIALLY the one where she gets swallowed by the plant thing, looks way better now, but I also, um....I kinda like the old ones too! I know you say the anatomy was terrible, and maybe that's true (I ain't an artist), but there's something about the old ones, specifically the soldier game over and scientist that....well, let's just say that I like viewing 'em once in a while. I don't know why, I can't put my finger on exactly what it is about them that...er...turns me on, but they're a couple of my favorite pics, and I don't just mean from your game. Maybe it's the perspective, maybe it's her expression coupled with the angle and the act. I dunno! ANyway, just wanted to let you knmow that I'm a fan of the old stuff too. And I'm glad you're doing the new ones, 'cuz hey, now I'll have TWO perspectives to look at (I'll just find the old ones somewhere online and save 'em to my drive, or keep a copy of the older version of the game or something.)

    Anywho, I think it's great you're remaking them, and it would be AMAAAAZIIIIING if you could add CG's to some of the enemies that don't have them already (Like the lizard soldier guy, I LOVE that sprite animation), but I totally understand if that doesn't happen.

I'm not much of an artist, and am no expert on anatomy, but the one with the scientist, when I look closely at Kuro's legs and pay attention to how her hips look, I get the impression that her hips must be entirely too wide considering her frame, and rather abnormally shaped if I am assuming, that the curve where her tailbone is is actually the other half of her hip, but if its not and is instead her arm, then her arm should have more lines or shading to distinguish where her elbow is from her forearm, because as it is, the arm in the back looks too big to just be her forearm or her bicep, not to mention from the perspective of the viewer in that image we should see more of her back.

      and there's probably more examples of "tits don't work that way" but I lack the expertise in both art and tits to be able to comment on that one.

      I for one love these new CGs, not only for the much nicer shading or the fixed anatomical issues, but mostly I like how expressive Kuro is in these ones, the old ones have almost all the same looking eyes, and the expression shown gives you the impression that she's enjoying it, which is fine, but its a little too much if you ask me, the sexual encounters in question could potentially be enjoyable, sure, but they are nonetheless non consensual, and the new expressions leave room to interpret that she could be enjoying it while still giving the impression that she'd prefer to be elsewhere if she could.


      that was longer than I'd like, but I've gotta say, Ky, if you could manage animating images like these for Noaika, that would be absolutely amazing, but these CGs alone leave me convinced that whatever you do as far as game over stuff, Noaika is in good hands.

  43. The new CG looks great! I might have actually enjoyed the H-content back when I played the game if they would had been like this -.-

    Kyrieru... I don't know why you don't open yourself more. After Noaika make a game that is for everyone and don't limit yourself to a particular public. If things don't go your way and it becomes a chore then add the H content to it. After all it should be fun for you, but really give a normal game a chance.

    You have so much talent that it is a shame not many will enjoy your games. Keep it up.

  44. At first i thought that was only, how can i say this, the way that people that know more about art can see where their work can get better, but then i really could spot some differences that you highlighted to us on the tutorials! are these new arts going to be implemented on the game?

    1. From before the Patreon, there are side projects I worked on, and one of them is my current "hobby" game, (AKA what I work on when I feel stuck in Noaika, or feel like doing something for fun). I'll probably end up finishing one of them before I finish Noaika, since they are smaller and simpler, but once Noaika is done there will probably be a string of releases one after another since I'll be able to focus on them.

      As of now, there are a total of four games other than Noaika, that I consider "in progress". How often I work on side projects generally comes down to how much difficulty I'm having with stuff in Noaika.

    3. They were all started at completely different times, and some are larger than others. Two of them were collabs with another artist, so they didn't take up much time.
      This one, for example, was started around the same time as Noaika.

  47. The new "pixelated" CG are way nicer than the previous ones and they better fit with the overall spirit and aspect of the game. Keep on the great work ! ^^

  48. In regards to anatomy help, there's a program called DesignDoll that gives you a virtual artist mannequin to play around with. It's fully adjustable. Not only can you move limbs around, you can also change things like shoulder span, hip width, etc.

  49. Uh, dude. I bought original kurovadis back when it was just released and I gotta say that I liked original art better than what you displayed in rework.

    I know that it is your game and all, but if you're going to publish it on mangagamer, could you at least give people an option to play the game with original graphics? It would be very sad if original artwork was to disappear.

    Out of hundreds games I played, Kurovadis was one of the good ones, so I think it would make sense to keep original version available.

  50. You worry too much mate. The originals AND the remakes are superb work but no matter what- the artist is always his own worst critic! Going over old ground doesn't help you go forward. You could conceivably keep on 'improving' the games you've already finished forever but you'll probably never be satisfied anyway. Unless you're going to release a "redux" or whatever of Kurovadis (an excellent game already I'm told) if I were you I'd quit now with what you already have achieved and focus on your next killer title. And as others have already said, do keep the option of the old alongside the new. Just my 2 cents but I think a lot of others would agree with me.
