Any Kurovadis and Eroico revison requests?

Manga Gamer and Nutaku want to sell Kurovadis and Eroico, so I took it as a chance to fix some of the game's long standing problems. Eroico's CGs have been revised, and Kurovadis is getting redone pixel art CGs. There are also some things I know I'll change for certain;

Both games:
Updated control code (The root of some keyboard problems)
Vibration function (and the ability to disable it)
Cheats/speed run tools (Such as restarting rooms)
Add at least 1-2 new instances of H-content.
Removal of overture interactive screen (Who the hell is that? I'm just Kyrieru)

Kurovadis:
Add options screen
Add CG and sprite gallery
Change the way starting a new game and loading works (it's easy to erase your game by mistake)
Fix a couple jumps
Gears.
Menu glitch (extra slot)
Add "level up" or "Press start to level up" text to teach player about menu screen.
Balance changes (Succubus boss)

Eroico:
Add powerup in first level (sword wave) to other levels (I forgot about it at the time.)
Make changes to final boss fight? (Add alternative damage methods, teach player about mechanic earlier in the level)
possibly add Infinite health in "animation viewer" rooms.
Give Hud eyebrows.
Make hud change expressions? (The sprites were always there, but un-implemented)


I'm going to be doing a short runthrough of each game to determine what else should be changed. However, if there are any mistakes in the game that you can think of, or things that annoyed you about the games, then now is the time to mention them. Some changes will take very little time, especially if I've already done it other games since then (such as Noaika), so feel free to mention something, even if you think it's unlikely.

    8. He who tries to please everyone will please no one at all. Eroico is good with the gender dynamics it has, there are plenty of other game available if you want dick girls. The unwilling male protag genre is sparse enough, by comparison at least, as it is.

  3. Would you consider putting a list in Eroico that explains how to do all the moves? There were a couple things I didn't know how to do even after 3 playthroughs of the game.

    1. Seconded. Moreover, maybe in the options menu for both games add a tab where button combinations for all possible moves would be shown? Controls in both Kurovadis and Eroico were really badly explained (or not at all). Eroico especially suffered from this, as there were more possible actions.

    1. Option to use room entry as a checkpoints? I don't want to use cheats to beat harder parts, but I also don't want to repeat large sections that I have no problems with, it's just wasting time.

    2. After playing the game again (As in, with a more player-esque experience), I found the checkpoints to be too far apart at some points, and there's at least one part where a bad platforming section is at the end of a long section.

      Not sure how I'll fix this, since adding just one checkpoint could make the part too easy, since it's a full heal where before there wasn't one, and health was spaced based on the absence of those checkpoints.

      One way might be....mid-way checkpoints that cost sparkles you get from enemies. Meaning you choose to use them or not.

  7. One thing I'd like but I'm not sure is feasible: An option to slow down the game.

    I used to play these games on an old macbook in a VM, which meant if I set them to fullscreen, the machine got maybe 15FPS on a good day.
    Which meant the physics loop got delayed, and the game effectively ran at half speed.
    Which was great! Finally my no-good-at-twitch-reactions ass could get through the fiddly platforming sections and dodge those projectile-flinging enemies.

    I figure slowing the game down is a much less "impactful" change than giving the PC more life or reducing enemies' lives.
    That said, depending on your engine it might not be practical to do so, without some interesting creativity...

    1. It isn't really properly possible without delta time, which I probably wont be implementing since everything has to work under it. Maybe I could include normal slowdown under cheats though.

      Speaking of cheats, cheat engine has a built in function that allows you to lower the fps of any game via a hotkey.

  9. Just a minor one for Kurovadis and maybe it was intentional, but the flies in the last area don't knock you over and it always struck me as weird. Actually I think the yeti thing might have that problem as well but I can't remember.

    Add visible timer option. mmm:ss.sss

    Kurovadis:
    Add Eroico's volume and scaling options.
    Ground pound needs some kind of nerf. You can stand on almost every enemy's head and kill with complete safety.
    CON is worthless compared to DEF. Maybe give DEF diminishing returns and CON an additional bonus that makes it easier to break out of holds? (Give a global hold strength increase to compensate.) Give some enemies / attacks an "ignores DEF" property?
    Add a Hard mode. Enemies (and projectiles?) move 20% faster, half hit-invincibility duration, half xp gain, 0.75/1.5 damage/defense ratio, holds/knockdowns are inescapable while the bar is green, no ground pound(?), and no invincibility on plain rolls. Ideally you'd only be able to roll through or ground pound a target if they deal enough damage to kill, but that would break up the flow too much and would require a damage boost, which leaves the door open for the player to pump ATK and mow everything down. You can already do it with charge attacks, but that requires pumping two stats and, you know, charging. Losing charge on hit goes a long way towards taming that.

    Eroico:

    1. I'll be adding some speed run centric tools, so I'll add a timer.

      The ground pound is powerful, but it also requires a lot of confidence to use, since some enemies can hit you from below.

      I'll have to look at the stats, since I completely messed them up at the time. I think the original idea was that one was better against enemies, and one was better against hazards. Cant remember if it worked out that way.

    2. Tried it out on spike pits and the smaller Kuro-eating plants. The damage is a percentage of max health, ignoring DEF. I suppose that makes it better against enemies :p

    3. If there was a hardcore mode in both games, I think taking damage during H-scenes would give players more incentive to get out of holds, get up faster and make enemies feel more dangerous.

  12. Eroico: I think you should make it if you fail to escape the H-animation before "finishing" you should take some damage.

    2. Yeah, I think I'd like enemies in any of your current or future games where getting caught can result in a fail state if you don't escape. So I'm highly in favor of that option. Maybe even design some enemies that specialize in the capture of the player as opposed to beating them down.

  13. For those of us who bought your game via the old method (not DLsite), will there be a way to download the new versions/updates from your blog or other source?

    As far as changes go, the only one I can think is maybe slightly alter the controls for the dodges in Kurovadis on controller/gamepad? It's been quite a while since I last played the game, but I remember it being a little awkward to use the dodges on controller using the stick.

    1. Pretty sure if you rename the file to .dll the old text files will just work. The new versions of the game will just replace the old ones, meaning everybody who bought it gets it.

    Something that always bugged me about Eroico is that when your struggle bar got all the way into the red, nothing happened. Obviously, it's hard to change that without going back and potentially doing a lot of work, but have you given any thought into doing anything with it (also, what was your initial idea for the other half of the struggle bar?)?

  16. I think the cheat menu is a good idea. I really, really like your games, but I tend to always use cheatengine to freeze my HP to get through the hard parts. Eroico's platforming was the hard part for me.

    Don't take this comment as a: "MAKE IT EZ YA GIT!". I'm just voicing how fucking casual I am with platformers.

    1. I don't have the patience to play some games without 3x fps, and there have been games where I've reached the "Alright, this has stopped being worth my time" stage.

      That's more or less why I think it's fine to add cheats. Let players enjoy the game how they want, and those who want the challenge will have it.

I don't really have anything to add, so I just want to take the opportunity to say that I recently beat Eroico for the first time and loved the way the music on the final boss stops for you to have a solemn Pong match with her. For some reason it gave me a really good laugh, which was not something I was expecting from a fuck-hard platforming H-game.

    Maybe throw in a couple Easter eggs for the update.

Between all these bi-weekly animations, the past game reworks, and seemingly endless 'side projects' that never get finished, there is a laughably small chance that he was somehow able to juggle all of that AND be productive on Noika in any remotely timely manner.

  29. If I remember right then the final phase of the final boss in kuro could be pretty easily trivialised by ground-pounding his head. Maybe add something to stop you getting quite so much damage in at once with this tactic? It's been a while so I may very well be talking out of my ass.

    As for something somewhat serious, I countered a bug that caused my game to crash, in one of the red zones (the one just after the first checkpoint in the red area) I managed to get two of those mouth eater guys together and ground pounded them, something else must have occurred during it because the camera moved to the upper left corner of the map and I lost control of my character (though I was able to break out of a struggle), the game was unresponsive afterwards.
    Fortunately I haven't been able to re-create it, so maybe it was just a one-off.

    2. Sounds good. While I'm on the subject of bugs I've noticed being knocked down with enough force to push you out of the room makes it so that you're unable to get back up. Entering an H scene allows you to continue as normal, but if nothing is around to grab you then you're only metaphorically screwed instead. =P

  31. In Kurovadis, I'd put some more emphasis on ground pound somewhere in the game. I didn't even remember it was a thing by the end and had to look up how to kill the last boss because of it.

    As for Eroico, could level replays be a thing? Or at least the ability to go backwards through levels? It's always irritating reaching a check point or finishing a level and realizing you missed a heart piece or power-up.

  32. Been forever since I played Kurovadis, but I remember there being a door transition that didn't quite match up, when leaving the...buried mansion? The Castlevania area.
    Door was like half the size on the exit side, compared to the entrance.
    I think the second room is that one that's split in half horizontally with enemies dotting it, when you're almost out of the area.

  34. In addition to adding a menu or something that tells you your special moves in Eroico, I would add similar functionality to Kuro, just in case a player forgets what powerups they've picked up, or how to do them.

    Also, maybe adjust the sword lunge move in Eroico? It's not very useful as an actual combat move and is mostly only good for speedrunning.

    1. Hmmm..Honestly, I'm not so sure what I would make it do, other than more damage or knockback.

      Luckily it will have a little extra use now that the sword wave power-up will be in other parts of the game, since it makes it go farther.

  35. Hey kryieru, love your games so far. Two things I can suggest though:

    1. Make clothing/armor more of a mechanic in your games. I always think it's a bit odd when you clothing magically just returns to you. (Could be especially awesome for noaika.) Armor/clothes could provide damage resistance or resistance to being knocked down too.

    2. Keep the h-scenes as a mechanic for sure and maybe add more consequences to it. Maybe they are harder to break out of, more difficult to stand up so it really becomes a menacing factor in the game. You can pretty easily beat any of the games without getting caught.

    1. When it comes to clothing, it's usually a matter of practicality. In a 3d game, you just change model and use the same animations. However in 2d, you need a separate sprite for every animation. So if you have say, 100 H animations, and you want 5 other outfits, then you're going to have to do 500 edits. Then, if you decide you want to change anything about the animation, you need to change every edit. (Thus why you do alts at the end of development)

      As for H scenes as a mechanic, Noaika has plenty of that. For Eroico and Kurovadis, though, it's more or less meant to be tacked on. However, it's entirely possible that I may have some kind of H mode where the adult content is more relevant.

    2. That's a good idea! I'm guessing the h-scenes you wouldn't have to alter if you had other outfits or a more simple (armored/unarmored) state in the game. The reason being (especially with noaika) all h scenes are in the unarmored state. Really what I was thinking for that is your armor wouldn't just come back. You would have to get it back.

      Then the only animations you need to alter are the basic fighting, running, jumping etc for unarmored mode.

    3. i dont know man that would break the flow of the gameplay and make the h feel repetitive, also that still feels like more work, kyrieru said the most he thought of doing would be armor piece variants and choosing breast size, and even that is more work than you probably think

    4. I wonder how much easier, if at all, it would be to use low-poly 3D assets instead of 2D sprites. It would make multiple characters, outfits, situations, and other variations a lot more feasible, right? I do love the look of low-poly 3D art.

    5. If you're doing a lot of things that benifit from 3d, ten it would be faster. However, everything that doesn't benefit from it is going to be more or less slower, since 3d modeling takes longer than low res sprite (just the textures of the model could take as long as the whole sprite and animations would have).

    6. Don't make the H-scenes harder to break out of. All those Japanese H games where you have to button mash to get away are HORRENDOUS in gameplay. When the porn becomes a torment you try to make go away, something has gone very wrong.

  36. In Kurovadis I would like to see a change for those large plant-like creatures that do massive damage when they grab you. I would like for them to have a sexual climax animation and then spit out the player, instead of instantly killing you. It would be like a special reward for building up your defense/health.

  37. Maybe you could make some slight changes to some enemies in Eroico so they don't feel tooo samey like:
    * making so the minotaur can't be stopped by shielding so you have to dodge as a way to make it different from the cat-girls...or at the very least make it so you get slightly stunned if you shield
    * maybe change the attack patterns in the mummies or alraunes so they are also not pretty much the same thing, maybe by making the mummies attack just by stretching their bandages to catch you and have the alraunes attack you by sprouting their vines directly underneath you =/...
    * in other news, maybe change the purple hair girl so rather than just being paralyzed you walk towards her?
    * make it so bosses can get their way with you through different methods in the fight rather than just by losing all your health? maybe have the 2nd boss use her gender-changing magic to make you more vulnerable during the fight ala ghost'n'goblins?

    In terms of Kurovadis you could just change the succubus boss so her temptation induced kill continues into the GO screen rather than the usual sequence?

    2. Some sort of audio cues for enemies besides attacking or exploding would be nice. Like, periodic sounds. Basic growls for zombies, screeching for the manti.
      Might be a bit much for a patch but...CG seemed like a bit much, too.

  39. I would love some more game over screens for some of the enemies that don't have one, like the cat girls. In terms of bugs, I found that sometimes when you get knocked down into the big turrets you can get stuck, the only way I've found to get out of this is to restart the game.

  40. In Eroico: the dude's forward thrust attack doesn't break pots, and the downward thrust attack doesn't break breakable blocks.

    Not related to your older games, but in Noaika, I once managed to duplicate the player character while breaking out of an H situation. You should check the code that adds the controllable character back into the game world, I think it sometimes runs twice.

    2. Pretty much my theory as well. I have no doubt Noika is a lot of work, but is it really 4 years of work? When seeing the progress that people like Eluku make while working on two games at once, it's hard to believe Noika isn't done yet, but then again, it took almost two years just for the demo to be released after it was announced. Kyreiru does great work on what he actually manages to release but I get the feeling the motivation just isn't there anymore which is why we never see any progress posts(Or barely any posts at all anymore). And now he's going back to older games to add content?

      Noika is almost guaranteed dead.

    5. It's not dead, it'll be done when it's done. There are other games, H and normal, that have taken just as long if not longer with even less communication or obvious progress.

      If you can't be patient then don't pre order stuff, and if you didn't pre order then stop complaining and just wait until it's done.

    6. There's 'patience', then there's just silly amounts of wait time. He lost motivation, plain and simple. People with motivation don't drop their major project that they are doing for profit to work on, what, has it been 4-6 'side games' that never saw the light of day? Weekly-turned-into-monthly patreon animations before being cancelled? Going back to redo content for games made years ago? Unless he's the absolute king of time management and an absolute work-horse, it's entirely unfeasible that he's been giving Noika any sort of productive levels of attention. Heck, the last screenshot of content for the game was on March 16, 2015. Over a year ago. 2016 is already halfway over and there's been zero evidence that he's actually done anything with Noika. No screens, no videos, no demos. Anyone that's followed H-devs before knows the 'flags' for the death of a project when they see one.

      Just like Parasite in the City 2 isn't going to randomly jump out of the shadows, Noika also isn't going to show up any time in the next 1-2 years, if ever. Considering Noika has been in 'development' for nearly for years now, almost two of which were consumed before the demo released, when both his previous games took half the time to go gold, all signs point to Kyreiru not wanting to work on the project and having to drag himself to do it at this point; Leading to slow, if not entirely halted progress. It's a side scrolling 2D hentai game, not a flight sim or some AAA 3D FPS. Unless this is the most ambitious side scrolling H-game ever made, with 40+ sex encounters fully animated, deep gameplay mechanics that extend beyond 'jump, shoot, and cycle what type of bullets you use', full blown voice acting or robust text story telling, and a huge gallery of CG's; I seriously doubt the majority of the time has been spent actually developing the game. Especially when he's cranked out high end pixel animations in a week just for the fun of it.

      I mean I appreciate what the guy does, and admire his work, But being a little frank with people about your motivations would be nice, especially if you want to cancel an overly-ambitious project you either can't or don't feel like finishing to the point that you actually start making games on the side.

    7. Also, just for reference, 'Noika' was announced in October, 2013. It lasted for about 6-ish months before having it's aesthetic and gameplay changed, and shortly after, was declared nearly finished in this post http://puu.sh/q9RdN/db6c1db33a.png two years ago. Since that point there's only been two screenshots of content, one being a mini-boss, and the sprite rework of the main character.

      Either Noika was secretly completely reworked a 2nd time, the content increased exponentially to be several times larger than planned, or he lost motivation.

    9. I understand the frustration, I myself has been anxiously awaiting at least an updated demo or something to play. I also know that sitting here bringing it up every chance I get isn't going to magically make it go faster so instead I just see what other good games I can find and when it does finally come out I'll play it.

  48. I played Kurovadis a lot and I think the skeleton should have an animation! Maybe not a CG, but at least an animation (else he's glitching in the player's corpse when approaching it).

    Your games are awesomes (Because before being H-games, they are GOOD games, and some h-games developpers seem to forget that a game needs to be good before being hentai)!

  51. One of the things that always struck me as odd were the ghosts in Eroico. They are the only enemies in the game that lack any sort of h-content. What's up with that? Also I like that you can be raped and still recover, but I'd like some lose by rape alternate scenes if possible. Don't want to overwork you, you're quite talented at it already. XD

    4. If I had to describe how I've felt in the past year, it's "tired", and when you're tired, a lot of things just don't seem worth the stress -HOLD ON THERES A GOD DAMN SPIDER BRB-

      -Anyhow, I'm more or less of the state of mind that this part of my life is just going to have to be the part where I felt awful all the time and screwed up a lot. Like the asshole spider that prevented me from writing until I killed it, I don't think that the constant lethargy and lack of motivation is going to be resolved until I've finally dealt with everything I've worked on over the years, since Eroico.

      Once Noaika, the projects few have seen, and my other obligations are over with, I'll feel a lot better. Until then, though, I'm probably going to be about as depressed and devoid of energy as I am now, and those aren't problems that I think are worth complaining about or blaming. I'd rather just try as hard as I can to do my work and fix my mental state, post stuff when it's done, and eventually come out the other end.

It's excitement, we get to see some creativity, and break our fingers trying to get through your ridiculous platforming, jumping puzzle bullshit sections. Depression is not something to be taken lightly, and if you really are experiencing things like this, I strongly recommend you do find someone to speak to you, whether it's a friend, relative, or professional. I hope you pull through and don't take this is a sign of pity from me or anyone, or even concern. You should do this for you. And do something that makes you happy. If nothing makes you happy right now, that's when you know you must reach out for help. Depression can become a giant ocean of shit. You are not alone.

    6. As far as this anon is concerned man, the pressure's off. You're a real nice dev who's always took very clear steps to make sure people know you aren't trying to rip them off or anything, and your only beef is with your own lack of energy and I sympathize with that like crazy. Forgetting the whole porn thing, your stuff has played a fair role in making me want to try making a full platformer in Game Maker and getting good at spriting, and that's why I lurk here at all. I hope you'll be able to see it as something besides a stack of obligations eventually, or at least work through it, but for now imma just wait patiently and get excited when there's something new to see.

I think having loads of people expecting you to do things sort of melts creative fervor into busywork chore grinding even more than just time spent and quantity of work does, as seems to happen a lot to people who do commissions and such. I'm not saying to give up or even work slower, just to be more relaxed and natural about doing it and to not let people grind your head against the desk too much while you try to get things done.

  54. You might've been on to something with showing the character's expression at the bottom of the screen. I've only seen it done in an H-game once before and it could really add to the experience if you have the time. (Though, it was used more as a magnifying shot.)

  57. From a gameplay standpoint damaging 'grapples' would be enjoyed. As it stands when you get downed you can just sit there for some enemies and not others.

    2. I see. Is it because the combat look to fast and flashy? The gameplay from what I seen look like it going be a button masher. As in you just need to tap one button over and over again to do all these move. Like there no light attacks and heavy attacks. To make different combinations of attacks. Althought that could change later on. Anyway the Guy who made this trailer it took him 2 years by himself and he had to buy marketplace items to speed up developement time. Which is not a bad thing to do or anything. Kyrieru I got to give you alot of props. The game you working on Noaika. All of it is being drawn by you,the coding,and the soundtrack is also being done by you. You started 2 years ago and you release the demo of it at that time. Dude not alot of people can do what you can do. Creating the entire game from top to bottom without outside help.

    4. Well, with combat involving multiple enemies, generally the game paces the attacks so that it becomes about attacking/reacting and utilizing the abilities you have. The enemies in that looked a simple (go right up to the player, attack, etc.) That was just my impression, though, I can't really give it a fair critique without having played it.

      Of course I'm willing to give feedback on stuff people show me.

  60. Seriously Kyrieru, what's the deal here? Every fan of yours is waiting patiently for Noaika. You released a kick ass demo for it, then you decide you want to change it. That's fine and sounds amazing, yet you don't even mention it anymore. We have yet to see anything from the game besides a still image of how the new character sprite looks (It looks awesome btw). Then you talk about a little mini game you were working on to fill the gap. Once again, nothing. Now you decide to go back to your previous games and "fix\update" things? I don't understand why you simply cant inform your fans and supporters of progress of upcoming projects. Even if it's just a simple little update post. That's a whole lot better than sweeping it under the rug.

    4. Noika is dead. It's taken more time than the other two games combined, and it's been nearly two years since the last content post showed a mini-boss for it. He's been hush-hush about it because he doesn't really have anything to show. Dude lost motivation for the project which is why he keeps hopping onto these '''''side projects'''''. And even then, he can't finish the side projects. There's been what, 2-3 'mini-games' that he announced that never saw the light of day over the last 3 years? And then there was the 'weekly animations' that turned into monthly animations before being stopped altogether along with the whole patreon bit(A site which is the kiss of death on ANY H-project. See: Breeding Season Malise and the Machine, Fatal Fragments, and Fiera Quest. Really, the list goes on.).

      I mostly just poke in out of curiosity every once in awhile; But the time between posts has gotten longer and longer, with less and less in the way of animations, art, or well, anything. It's a shame, really. He's incredibly talented, but it's become pretty clear that he doesn't really enjoy the work anymore if he has to drag feet so much on it. Patreon was the straw that broke the camel's back, IMO. That shit is cursed.

    5. Patreon can either make you or break you. Take a look at Future Fragments, that project is doing extremely well and they treat their supporters very well and fair. They have gained such a good reputation,they are now working with some A class voice actors for the game (I'm talking Naruto level voice actors). Whenever they hit a bump in the road they always make up for it by at least posting an animation or something. HentaiWriter is doing such a great job of keeping things smooth.
