GM is a butt

GM Studio, I love ya, but sometimes you make me want to punch babies.

So, in terms of the demo, here's the situation.

GM Studio can't deal with files in the same folder as the exe like 8.1 could. This means I'm going to have to make some changes to how my save system works and a few other things, depending on what the solution is. Bottom line is, it's something that's going to take some tinkering, so the demo won't have save-games, for now.

For that reason, the focus of the demo may be a bit different. Here are the things I could focus on today and tomorrow, before a demo is released.

-H-event with NPC
-3 enemy/trap H animations
-Game intro
-Story related elements
-Shop

Normally, my priority would be the gameplay related elements, but in this case since there's no saving it makes little sense to make the player do anything that would take any amount of time to accomplish.

Feel free to let me know what you'd like my priority to be, or what it is you want to see out of the demo. As it stands, I think it's more or less just going to be a quick first look at the gameplay and some H content.

  1. The enemies and h events since the save doesn't work, everything else could come after until you patch the save system or finish the full game

  2. Have you tried "datafiles" folder? If you inculde files in project - studio uses this folder to store them and as root folder. I store there config.ini for example and read it with simple ini_open('config.ini')

  3. I'm honestly not big on demos; I prefer to have the final product from the getgo, even if it's a game I don't expect to like.

    But I guess having the first few scenes of the game is nice if the game has a story. I'm not fond of demos that either throw you in the middle or cut out story elements entirely.

  4. Just seeing basic combat and h scenes would be fine. Demos don't need to be too in depth anyway. Looking forward to your work:3

    3. It isn't lacking in platformers, either, so what's your point? Everyone's here for something Kyrieru-specific, whether it be his glorious sprite art, H-work, music, gameplay, or whatever else.

    4. I am of the opinion that Kyrieru's games are of a significantly higher quality than most platformers available on the internet. I also don't think that the sprite sex isn't as high a quality as the gameplay.

      Of course, that would all be opinion, and not necessarily everyone else's. I apologize for not recognizing that previously.

  8. Trap H animations? I like the sound of that.
    As with the demo, I would like to see the story above all. That way it will set me up for the main game. For me personally the story will be the main hook and in turn, it will make the H content better. I'm a sucker for stories + sex.
    From the previous screens, this is looking to be a beautiful game. I look forward to seeing it. As always Kyrieru, keep up the good work. Who gives a fuck if it takes a while.

  9. First time commenting on your site, but I definitely enjoyed Eroico and am looking forward to your demo. Don't rush too much though! If you want to take the extra time to make a more attractive demo or for your own personal life, then it'll be worth the weight.

    That aside, if I had to rate what I'd prefer you to focus on in descending order:
    1) enemy/trap H animations
    2) H-event with NPC
    3) Shop
    4) Story related elements
    5) Game intro

    As has been said above, there is plenty of H on the internet, but it's much rarer for there to be H games with actual fun real-time gameplay. Your games are rare works of quality in this niche, and you want to capitalize on that.

  10. It doesn't matter if the player can't save their progress, work on the game mechanics regardless. After all, the old arcade games didn't really keep much of a record; the high scores, the only legacy each player leaves, gets cleared whenever the thing is unplugged.

  11. Hmm, after careful consideration of reading what others said while seeing Kyrieru's post I think the next most logical step would be to safely put a pause on the demo until next week. Idealistically, a demo represents a small portion of the game to demonstrate its overall potential. I don't see the point in releasing an incomplete demo just for small spoilers and animations. I think presentation plays an important role and though many have been patient in waiting for the next release it's important to understand that to meet those expectation one must have a complete package, not just a few things here or there; otherwise it will lack in substance, don't you think? Getting immersed within a game through music, story, game-play, provocative sequences, and the like make for an overall great feeling. Having that tarnished by giving an unfinished product in this case the (demo) may harm or otherwise tarnish it. Anyways, that's my two-cents on this matter, hopefully it brings some insight or maybe not, either way it's out there. Good luck Kyrieru and to the loyal fans, hang in there guys and maybe girls? Later! :)

    1. I can't help but feel you're trolling, here. Kyrieru's finally working hard and making tons of progress on his project thanks to his strict deadline he imposed on himself, and now you're saying "noooooo, kyrieru, take as long as you want, fufufu." His blog has been black for like three months straight. What do you think he was doing that whole time?! My advice to Kyrieru is to keep his ass in gear for as long as he can now that it's there, and to hit his promised deadlines, or break his drawing hand trying. I know from experience how easy it is to slip into "I'll get it done tomorrow" laziness for weeks or even months at a time. Keep that fire in your belly lit, Kyrieru. Don't listen to these evil sirens telling you it's alright to take a break. They've never done any art before. X'D

    2. No, he's pretty much on the same track as me, The important part is that I did get my ass in gear, and that was the entire point of setting a deadline in the first place. "pause until next week" means "keep your ass in gear and release something you're satisfied with"..

    1. Yeah, I didn't see it happening, either. It's nice that he's working again, but I'd rather have him say "alright, I'm gonna post my status everyday and get this done!" than "Demo this week.....naw, just kidding. I was just using your enthusiasm to get myself going, lol." Hopefully he gets a demo out next week, but I won't be too surprised if it gets pushed back again.

      Of course, I can't really blame him. Every game company on the planet misses deadlines. And I'm glad he's finally getting his game done. Kyrieru's stuff is some of the best!

  13. Oh yeah, this will be your first game in studio.

    Well if you're wondering about saving files... yes. GMStudio doesnt take kindly to save files being in the same directory as the game. It all goes to the appdata/roaming/{game name} folder for easy keeping and so most normal people dont mess with it.

    If you're using ini files than what Gamer XP said is completely correct. Use the included files folder under rooms.

    1. That's just it, though, accessing the files as the developer isn't the issue, it's the player's access to the files. If there's something the player needs to change in a config file, I want them to be able to do it. Or if they want to back up their saves, I don't want them to have no idea where they are.
