Character/style study

For kicks, I was thinking I'd do a couple of character studies. That is, making observations about a particular manga style, creating rules for reproducing it, and then doing a sketch or two with what I learned. (And outlining what I did)

Any artist's styles or characters you'd like to see a character study of?

  1. This is my personal favorite artist. I love the feel and flow of the lines as well as the designs.

  5. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (AKA: The girl who leapt through time) Had a really nice manga esque style. Something about it made me feel very at home with it.

    1. It probably helps that the character design for the film is Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, FLCL, Nadia, etc) and pretty much all the post-2005 films Mamoru Hosoda directed (Summer Wars, Wolf Children)

Sadamoto's designs are actually a pretty good style to learn from because he was initially a talented animator; generally a good thing because he knows how to design characters for animators.

    1. Asides from the Korean artists that's such a weird list but why not lol.

I second Yuki and Kentaro for kicks.

I'll throw in a curveball too and add off my head:

Tsutomu Nihei (Architecture porn, not literally!)
      Takahiko Inoue (Slam dunk, Vagabond)
      Hiroki Endo (Eden, All-rounder Meguru)
Hiroaki Samura (Blade of the immortal)

    2. Man if you haven't read Ragnarok you should, that is one tight manga.

Stand by you is a little weird, i have to admit that. But i love it anyways

  10. Don't know if that can help you, but my favorite artists are :

    - redjuice (http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=3446)
    - toi (http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=79308)

and oguchi/tmt who both have styles that are alike (http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=19351 / http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=17112).

Shirow Miwa also has an interesting style and maybe easier to reproduce.

  12. Not sure if the artist I like counts as manga style, but I like Kenkou Cross's works very much

  14. Wow, I could go forever on this.

This is just a fraction of a few that I narrowed down off my head for variety's sake (ranging from manga to doujin artist and just plain cg artists):

Wagi (Maji de watashi ni Koi Shinasai)
Note: Very, very good line art. Every character in this page has it's own b/w line art samples.
    http://www.minatosoft.com/majikoi-s/character.html

    Amakura (tenioha)

    Orion (Sengoku Rance, Alicesoft games)

    Maybe (Doujins and games)

    Bubuzuke (Vanadis soft)

Digital Accel (Highschool of the Dead, countless doujins)

    Ooyari Ashito (Little Witch games)

    Komorikei (Ricotta games)

    Sano Toshihide (G.J? games)

    For non-h artist:

Yuusuke Kozaki (No More Heroes, Fire Emblem Awakening)

Shina Takashi (Zettai Karen Children, Ghost Sweeper Mikami)

Stopping myself before I got TL;DR.

  15. Well, I was recently impressed by this manga: http://www.batoto.net/read/_/80415/otoyomegatari_v1_ch2_by_iichan-translation-group/30

And, mostly I'd like to know why the lead female character in this is so insanely beautiful than any other girl. I mean, there's an age difference, but even when the age is close, Amira is always the best looking girl in the room. That's the impression, and it comes purely from the art. So... what makes it so? Abundent eyelashes, big eyes, what?

    1. I second that, Kaoru Mori's other earlier stuff is really good too (Emma, Shirley.)

Especially just for the painstaking amount of detail she learns to do throughout the serialization of Emma. (Which is when her style really grows)

  16. I was thinking of the art style done in the Mega Man Zero games, and possibly the art style in the Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor games as well..

  17. Akira Toriyama (Dragonball Z, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon, Dragon Quest, you know...)
Ayami Kojima (The old-school Castlevania artwork).
Kanno Hiroyuki (One of my favorite old-school writers, artists. May he rest in peace.)
I don't have a list of too many favorite artists, so I'll just list these three. Too tired. -_-

  19. I'm not really posting for my own interest, but rather for yours.

I believe that studying Obata Takeshi's work could be very interesting, known mainly for his work on Death Note:

Another interesting style would be Kawashita Mizuki's:

  23. I always considered Tony Taka to be an artist of quality far above most of his peers. Great shading, beautiful faces and wonderful proportions of beauty instead of distorted proportions (I am looking at you, crude and simple fetish fuel artists of 'She has big boobs/butt so she has to be beautiful, right? Right?' style).

    ReplyDelete
  24. Miyama Amehiko, while H artist more than anything, has a really nice style - general quality of drawings are accented by warm, yet not intrusive lining and colors.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've suggested Tony Taka before - don't know what happened to the post, didn't got saved or something?

The man shows skill in his drawings far above expected quality, combining beautiful faces, nice body proportions and decent shadowing (at least when we talk about his original art style, not oversimplified one for the sake of animated productions).

    1. Tony's problem is that all his girls have the same face. That's true for a lot of artists, but it's really notable for him...

  26. Duuuude. You should draw Megaman 2 style boxart for Kurovadis. Or if that's too hard, try something like the last frame of this.

    1. The atelier iris serie is worth checking too, and the art would be closer in style to Kyrieru's own.

  29. 1.Lone Survivor by Jasper Byrne- finding subtlety in a horror game is quite challenging, and though the graphics are pixely, they are pretty sureal, enforcing the feeling that something is wrong.
    2.Earthbound, Mother 3,Lisa the first by Dingaling(http://rpgmaker.net/games/4412/)
