Eroico has been released on Steam

Eroico has been released on Steam:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/947600/Eroico/

If you download the demo, your unlock codes (Eroico or Noaika) can be placed in the game folder called "cloud", which will unlock the game as usual (uninstalling it may remove it from the libary though). If you've bought the game before and want a Steam code, email me and I'll see what I can do. However it might not happen right away, since I don't have the ability to create codes freely, they must be requested from Steam.

There have been a few minor updates:
-F1 now activates a cheat mode (the 1 key refills health and magic, 2 restarts the room for speed running practice.)
- New title screen
- The ending has different music, and is now animated.
- A few bug fixes.
- The Steam version should now automatically apply button mapping to Xinput controllers, which aren't supported normally in GM8.
- Cloud saves.

Edit: I'll be uploading the updated version to all the other platforms soon. (DLsite, Nutaku, Mangagamer, here.)

  1. Thank you! I'm not sure if the backup is working. I placed eroico_unlock.dll in the cloud folder, ran and quit the game (to prompt the cloud save to process, in theory), uninstalled the game, deleted the steamapps/common/eroico folder, and re-downloaded the demo, but the .dll didn't return.

    1. Well, it backups everything in the folder, so if it isn't coming back, then the unlock file wouldnt be either.

Maybe it won't work. In my case, the demo stays in the library even if I uninstall it, so that's probably why it works for me.

    2. Yeah, that must be it. I think the fact the demo doesn't stay in a regular user's library's probably the difference. The files do stay around locally if you uninstall, but that's not quite the same thing as being backed up on the cloud. No big deal though!

  2. Will you be updating the Eroico page here on the blog with the new version? It still has the old 8.1 demo download.

    2. Awesome, thanks!

I already bought all of your games directly from the links here, and I very much prefer it that way, with the direct download/just having the files. Don't use steam for hentai games, for a few different reasons. One of them being that it would just be less convenient to use it. I have a big folder where I have all my hentai games, all folders tagged with info like their Dlsite codes, how I acquired them, and other "logistics" kinds of details. Steam would just get in the way and make the process more cumbersome. Much easier to just have them all in one place, and the freedom to move the files around to wherever I want them as well.

I'll keep an eye on things here and download the updated version whenever you get around to posting it here on your site. Been a while since I've played the game, so I figure it'll be a good excuse to go back and give it another go.

    1. I agree. That game is so well done, and an instant classic to me.

    2. Me too. I already paid for the game and received DLL ages ago but I'm ready to buy it again. Upgrade the game with level editor and BAM - it's virtually eternal.

    1. Other than fixes, there won't be many changes.
I might make a ghost animation but that would probably be the only thing.

      Delete
    2. Uh, I'd definitely like to see that. The ghost is the only one missing an animation, as far as I know.

On that note: I have to say, that I find it funny that the movable rocks get a hart bubble if you should go down near one. x D

Big thanks for your quick reply on my mail btw. ^^

    1. I'm not sure. If I do it wouldn't be revised beyond CGs, so I might sell it at a reduced price, and reduce the price here.

  10. Hey Kyieru i found about you through legend of krystal forums that led me through blogpost and so forth and etc. anywho let me get to the point i bought two of your only games years ago (i'd say around 2012-14) and found you on steam so i figured i say congrats on making it this far in your life as a game developer and i am glad you are not suffering any times of heart aches like financial and other life bs and once again thank you for making theses wonderful games in my life and i wish for the best for you

Everyone has a little life BS, so I can't complain about mine. Eroico has helped with the financial side of things though, for sure.

  13. Played through Kurovadis again and yeah, it has problems that new CGs wont solve. I can see why you'd be reluctant to re-release it to a new audience.

To be fair the rolling mechanic is still really interesting and Kurovadis's moving/attack animations are amazing. Playing it again I noticed her punch has a vastly different flourish depending on what weapon you have equipped. Nice.

But on the other hand the wall jump is janky, the knockdown mechanic is infuriating, the menus are terrible, the gears don't work right, exploration is pointless, the game has no coherent theme, the final boss sucks, the ending is incomprehensible, and some of the level design had me channeling The Angry Video Game Nerd. I mean in the mansion area you have two separate routes that dead end at the same power up. What WERE you thinking?

I still like it though. Here's hoping I'll like your future games too. And that you actually finish one of them.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well, I agree and disagree.

      - Wall jump isn't that janky, kinda depends which control method you're using.
      - Knockdown can certainly mess you up given the knockback. Being random isn't good.
      - Exploration wouldn't be pointless if the rewards were more than essentially a free level. The best fix for this would making level upgrade some stats, the the powerups the others.
      - I think the game's theme is 2.5/4 coherent. As it is the mansion comes out of left field though, I feel like it wouldn't be the same game without it.
      - The Gears are an atrocity.
      - I don't think the final boss is that bad compared to Eroico bosses. None of my bosses have been high enough effort though.
      - The ending was pretty simple; the whole game is night time, the ending is day time, and she's not wearing combat gear. Not a good ending but it's not exactly hard to understand.
      - The alternative mansion routes are just that; alternative routes. They don't lead to a dead end, they lead to an essential powerup.
      - Menus in all my games haves sucked outside of some of the unreleased ones.

That said, I'm not defending a lot of the design in the game, I just don't consider them to be fatal flaws the way the CGs are. However, it is true that fixing things would probably quickly devolve into fixing a million tiny problems, which is why I'm not in a huge rush to do it.

      Delete
  14. The thing with the alternate mansion routes, you see I was trying to be pithy but I think I failed to communicate my problem. Let me explain what happened to me.

So I arrive at a crossroad in the mansion and decide to follow the bottom path. This leads to the roll power-up. Pretty cool. I go back to the crossroad and decide to see where the right path goes. It leads to a hole which I descend. I'm back in the room where the roll power up was. I can't climb back out, I have to backtrack through the lower path or reset my game. Annoying.

Kurovadis frustrates me because the core mechanics are so good but the game you actually traverse with them feels weak by comparison. If that makes any sense.

    1. Ah yeah, that's understandable. Thing about designing games is it's easy to forget what the player does and doesn't know, so at the time I probably didn't consider that the player wouldn't know that they both lead to the same place. Same issue as how some players didnt realize there was an inventory screen.

    2. Well you live and you learn.

By the way how are your Steam sales doing. Pretty good?

    3. Can you actually engage in some physiotherapy? You had these issues for years with your arms and shoulders(maybe back) and you dont seem to work towards healing them.

You honestly dont seem to do anything besides meander in small nothings and pet projects that never see the light of day. I honestly hope you take better care of yourself cus you mentioned this sort of stuff before (sometime in the past 5 years about a desk and something else). I hope you dont have a desk job as well cus thats hell on your back arms shoulders you name it.

    4. Shoulder pain that persists isn't really something that's been a problem until now. Luckily the problems I've had in the past aren't actively hindering my work at this point.

I don't see what you're doing either, so I'll also assume that you aren't doing anything.

    5. To be fair, he isn't the one with a blog posting details of games he's making with promises of releases years ago.

There are plenty of game devs doing the same stuff you are, but they post monthly updates with goals and give an idea of how much work there is to go. Since your last demo of Noaika there were preorders (4 years ago), then patreon animations had to come first, then Eroico updates, then Aster, then the sonic game, then you were talking about new protagonists, then making a GM2 template. 2 years ago you said Noaika was pretty close to done percentage wise.

At the end of the day we love your stuff and want to play it. I don't think it's shitty to check in and make sure you aren't dead.

    6. When work is the only thing in life you care to do, yet you can't, and then people criticize you for not working, it gets tiring really fast.

It's easier for me to just shut up, do what I can, and come back when I have something worth talking about.

      Delete
    7. I don't think he was criticizing you for not working and if there's long term health issues that prevent you from working all you have to say is "Sorry guys, working is going to be slow because of X. I'll update when I can but I can't make any promises on progress".

I mean you just said you were taking a break for a week. What about the other 3 months? Not getting pissed at you, just honestly curious (lol) about what cool stuff you're doing and when we might get a peek at it.

    8. There's all sorts of art that takes years to finish and changes significantly from what it was originally planned to be, and there's even more projects that are considered and chipped away at for a while before being scrapped for various reasons. I think I can live with waiting for what you want to make taking a while to be finished because I've already been convinced I like what you do and I think I have realistic expectations about creative process and a lack of entitlement to the product of other people's pains and efforts. Forgive me if that sounds like virtue signaling, it's just what I think is true at 2am.

    9. The only thing I'm really concerned about is that I vaguely remember years ago you saying something along the lines of that you want to do porn games because you think it's the only way you can appeal to an audience given your skill level. I think you're someone who cares about detail, quality, and technique and I hope you won't ever feel locked out of working on things you want to do or chained to a medium if your interests change over time.

    10. @Curious;
I stopped mentioning health issues because I felt that it wasn't very interesting for people to hear about every month. While there's visual stuff that I could post, I think that it's better to just hold off until I have something tangible that people can play. I plan on doing an update about Steam, and what it means for my situation, but I want to finish a patreon animation first since it will be relevant to the update.

@Tokyo: I don't think it's entitlement to expect a game that was pre-ordered to completed lol. But I appreciate the sentiment.

In the beginning, what I said was that I didn't think my skill level was high enough to make games worth selling. My goal was to make H-games for fun, get a bit of an audience, and then eventually sell mainstream games once I was good enough.

After I realized that I could sell H-games, the necessity for developing mainstream games to make a living was gone, so at this point it's more down to preference. Eventually I may try my hand at a mainstream game or two, however that would be far into the future, after I've sorted things out on this end and released a bunch of H games. In the end, my goal was just to do what I love for a living, and what I love is making games, whether it's H or otherwise.

As a side note, you're not complaining when updating your blog /twitter with information, even if it is about your health. Instead it shows that you are making progress. It's also a good way to let off some steam ,or talk about stuff not entirely related to the games that you make. If you were previously bashed for posting to update people about your health, steel yourself because some (if not many) people are like this. But, I believe the community (backers or not) appreciates the quality content you deliver, and wants to see an update, however small it may be.

    1. Once I release something, speculation doesn't matter and what I say will have tangible context. Until then, posts are more stressful for me than helpful, and nothing I say will hold much weight.

I'll go back to casually talking about work once it feels positive to do so again. (positive both for me and for followers of this blog).

  20. Hello! I wanted to start off by saying I love your work. Not just Eroico but your animations too. I just recently beaten Eroico and it shocked me how much I like it. Both gameplay and the artstyle. Now I'm donw flattering you , I actually had a quick question. I was wondering if the main character and the main girl (who heals you and whatnot) had names? If not that's totally fine, I'm just super curious.
