Kyrie's all-encompassing list of things

Kyrie's all-encompassing list of things

People want a status update, so here it is.

I haven't released anything for a long time. Because I barely make enough money to live off of through residual sales (would help if I didn't have to support my family, too), I haven't paid taxes and student loans in full. Can anybody say "crippling debt"?

But hey, no problem. I have a patreon, and I can develop games pretty quickly.

Except, I suffer from insomnia, back-pain that inhibit's breathing during sleep, and find it difficult to find the will to even wake up in the morning. This, combined with lethargy from other health problems, and occasional symptoms that literally make it impossible to work at times, all might have something to do with the depression. There's nothing more frustrating than helplessly watching time slip away when you want to work, and then lacking the energy to do so when you finally can.

Yet, despite the solution to at least some of these problems being to simply release something so I have the time to deal with them properly, I find myself held back by standards, and even the smallest of projects have been delayed because I felt something wasn't good enough, or "should" be better. But then they just get caught up in the rest of my life's problems, and seem as unlikely a solution as anything else.

Promises in passing become obligations; more in the way before I can finally get back to finishing things that will make a difference. Porting Eroico and Kurovadis are examples of things that seemed simple at first, but simply take a lot of time.

List of Projects and Status.

Here's a list of all the stuff I've worked on, and their status.

Noaika: It's almost done in terms of %, but there's still a lot left to do in practice. I still need to do pretty much the whole soundtrack (at least 20 songs), fix all the bugs, do animation variations, a lot of the cutscenes and writing I've left to the end, and most importantly, I'm going to need to go through and change the way things work in order to lower the memory requirements.

Side projects: These are things I worked on whenever I was taking a break from Noaika early on, and later as potential quick projects to release so that I wouldn't be broke while working on Noaika. (Not that it ever worked out that way)

Collab-1 "Monster girls": I did a Kurovadis sized project with a sprite artist, involving mischief maker-like mechanics and monster girls. The majority of the backgrounds, H, and character animation were completed. What's left is to do around 5 songs, bosses, and some of the remaining level design. I set it aside at the time to "finish" Noaika. (This was more than a year ago)

Collab-2 "asteroids": Another collab with the same artist, but with the goal of finishing in a week. This one is an asteroids style game with some twists, and H content. Like with the other one, I'd need to finish some music, and program program some stuff. This one is the smallest of these side projects.

Side project 1 "Castlevania": This one began as a castlevania clone but kept changing, and is now in an uncertain state. In it's previous castlevania clone state, it's 50% done, but in it's current changed state it's less-so.

Side project 2 "Mario/sonic": This game was initially my project file for testing new code for the camera, controls, and various other things in Noaika. Eventually I added some animations for fun and it became a project on it's own, somewhat of a mix between Mario and Sonic (attempting to do sonic right), and with a monster girl protagonist.

Plans

So...plans. At the end of the day, despite my depression, and financial troubles, I've never really been too worried, and despite the comments from people saying I'm some scam artist, I've never really been all that concerned with my reputation, either. Money? I'll release stuff and pay it off. Players? All that matters is that I make good games, and people will be happy "eventually" when I release a string of good titles.

However, that can only go on for so long before I have to commit to something that will help my current situation, rather than repeating a self destructive cycle. I need to get out of debt, I need to start saving money for the future, and once everything is out of the way and I'm "free", I need to make sure I'm not in this situation again.

First of all, I need to release some stuff. Unfortunately, Noaika isn't the quickest solution given it's scale, and I can't scrape by until it's done the way I have been. Patreon works as a constant, temporary solution, but it's not going to make a lot of money all at once, the way a game would. The sooner I pay stuff off, the less I'm getting hit by interest in the long run.

So, from longest to shortest, I've put the previously worked on projects in this order, with the top being the shortest to complete.

Asteroids
Mario/Sonic
Monster Girls
Castlevania
Noaika

This month I need to release two Patreon animations in order to survive financially. As soon as those are finished, I'm begin finishing those previous side projects, until I'm in a financially stable again. Once I am (And given that released games contrinue to make money), I'll get back to Noaika, and potentially use some of the money to pay for help with the soundtrack.

As I've said in the past, anything I release until Noaika is done will be free for those who pre-ordered it. Less of a bonus at this point and more like a constant apology. As for Kurovadis and Eroico, given that it's taking too long, I'll probably release Eroico with the redone CGs, and leave the rest for when I have the time, though I might finish it amidst the Patreon stuff.

Anyhow, that's what's going on, and that's the plan.

    1. As far as graphics go I don't actually encounter this problem much anymore. Nowadays the problem is usually with game design. However, I think it's more a result of testing a lot, which results in getting bored of your own game, creating the illusion that there's always something missing.

    2. Perhaps the solution there is to release small chunks of WIP content to Patreon backers as a way to not only show that you exist and are working on things, but as a way to get community help with bug fixing and other feedback issues.
Not sure about the feasibility of that though.

  2. Hey man, good luck with your things, get well soon.
While I didn't get around playing Eroico, I really enjoyed Kurovadis (one of the best H games out there)

Have you considered releasing on steam (cencored) and offer a free uncencore patch? hunniepop got away with it.

    1. I'm weary of releasing on Steam because mainstream culture doesn't exactly react well to rape.

    2. I feel like Eroico can get away with it. Kurovadis, probably not, but Eroico has the elements of "typical weeb porn game and the protagonist is a male"

  3. I'm not sure if your position on having employees of sorts has changed, but the quickest all-around solution is to start delegating and collaborating. Delegation will force you to have a clear design from the outset that can't be redone or evolve into something else part-way, and keep things on schedule; while small-time up-front contracts for other people's projects will get money in your pocket and keep you out of the ruts that happen from focusing on a single project for so long. Doing bits and pieces of multiple projects at once actually raises productivity because it keeps your creativity high and teaches you to be satisfied with a job that's 90% perfect instead of wallowing over the 100% perfection that will never actually be completed.

There are ways to get people to work for you without cost too, particularly with music. A free song and credit is a small price to pay for increased exposure, and it's common even for major companies to incorporate fan submissions for character and object designs.

Your best move right now is to drop the collabs and side projects that won't immediately give you cash, get a slim version of Noaika released, then go back to the other stuff before finishing Noaika. Just put out half or a third of Noaika, now and for free, like an extended demo. Analyze the feedback while finishing the shorter stuff. If the reaction isn't hot enough to warrant making a finished sellable version, just cut your losses. Then for god's sake, get yourself a project manager :p Seriously, development and management in one person does not exist in the real world. Read up on it before starting your next work.

    1. I'll probably move onto managing projects with multiple people in the future, but that will come later, when I have more money and titles behind me with a consistent dev cycle.

I wouldn't accept work without pay, so that angle for music is out of the question. Plus I have high standards for stuff, and that amount of asking for iterations isn't something one can ask of a free worker in good conscience.

I won't be releasing a slim version of Noaika. Releasing a third of it, in terms of music and the work I still have to do, would be as much work as finishing one of the shorter side projects. Also, I'm not really concerned about Noaika being sellable. It is, especially compared to my past games.

I don't need a project manager. I've lead projects with multiple people many times before, so that isn't really the issue. The problems I have with design, are things that would beneficial for me to solve whether I work alone, or with others in the future, and at the end of the day a project manager isn't going to be able to do much about health issues.

Project management only works when the payment is coming from on high, not the other way around lol.

  4. seems like you are having a harsh time. you know, your work are very acceptable on Dlsite and DMM, you can sell your product on there and at mean time it would create more follower to visit your Patreon page and thous more people will be hyped for your work thous more money even you sell your product cheap. And I think it is the best time to do so since Japanese Yen is now more expensive.
PS. most of RPG game sells around around 1500 yen, and lots of ACT sells around 2000 yen. I suggest that you sell your small product around 800 yen (it is around 8 dollar USD if you live in US), and Noaika sells 2300 yen (around 22 dollar USD). hope this will help, and I know your last few games are on Dlsite.

to end this boring suggestion. long story short is that sell your small games or even your animation on Dlsite too and make your next game more expensive., trust me people will buy it.

Well, to look at the bright side, maybe writing it down like this helps you see the big picture of the situation yourself.

  6. I know you're going to get crap for this post from overzealous fans but ignoring that I just want to say if you do the collabs then for the love of all that is good within you, resist the urge to turn a small side project into a major thing. You have a tendency to overload yourself.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, the side projects aren't going to get more complicated since they are already almost complete. Plus, the mechanics of the monster girl one stand on their own without fluff, so it's pretty safe. It's one of the few games I've made thats based on a unique mechanic, rather than generic fighting and focusing on enemies/items and stuff.

  7. I pre-ordered Noaika, but I'd like to make a Paypal donation if you do release a new game. Will you accept those?

BTW, asteroids game sounds like it might be cool. Especially if you can finish it this year.

    1. The asteroids style game was initially meant to be finished in a week, and it's one of the few games that stayed a very small project. Once I've done the patreon stuff I need to do, it will be finished pretty quickly, which is why I chose to finish it first.

Some of the other projects would only take a month or so, with the longest being the castlevania style, which would take a couple monthes, given it's weird situation. I probably wont have to do all of them anyway though.

  8. Curious if you're still planning on finishing the pixel art cgs for Kurovadis. No worries if not, I am suffering from major depression too so I know how it goes. The art you showed off in your previous post was amazing despite your claims to the contrary, and I would love if CGs of that caliber were put in-game as they are.

    1. Yeah, I'll be finishing Kurovadis's revision at some point. Given how long Eroico took just to convert it with few changes, I'll probably wait until after I've release at least of the side projects.

  9. I have a suggestion for you. Find five or so guys to test your unreleased games for free. I'm sure there are plenty here willing to do that, perhaps they'd even pay you to be able to test your games. It'll be much more beneficial to the games. You'll be able to spend much less time playing your own games, and receive more constructive feedback. It might even allow you to skip your perfectionism, when you see a ton of positive feedback. But be sure you know how to ask them the right questions, and what of their feedback is valuable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The problem is that a lot of the polish comes from the extensive testing, and some of it is unavoidable for programming reasons. I think the main thing is that I just need to be more self aware about when that boredom has set in, and when it's actually problem or not.

      Delete
  10. Letting people test your content without a contract leads to major content leaks. I'm confident that I'd not do that but I'm absolutely sure there are not many people who think like me.

That or that thing where they claim that giving yourself an IV with 1/10 diluted MDMA completely removes all symptoms for a couple of weeks (magical!)

  21. Kyyyy, you told me once a while back that your financial situation was stable.

You have admirers. People that love your work (the short term would be "fans" but that makes it sound overzealous).

You're way more critical of your work than we are, and that's fine but then don't resign yourself to being knee-deep in shit when you've got an entire following that would gladly buy some of your stuff to help you get out of it!

We live in a digital age. And digital products >can be improved at any time<. You don't need to spit-polish a game to perfection before releasing it. If the product is functional and completed up to a *normal* standard then release it and improve it (like you're doing with Kurovadis and such) later instead of taking twenty years to finish a product on a homeless person's budget!

For the sake of argument, let's say that Noika is finished in terms of being able to play from start to finish. Imagine if you released Noika now with a complete story but some of the elements of the game isn't what *you'd* want it to be, then you can release updates or new versions over time, while enjoying the income from your product that helps you do so!

This is my obviously on-the-outside take on things and it is NOT a demand or a request or anything. You do you Kyrieru, but it might not neccessarily have to be this way.

    1. My financial situation was stable. I make less from previous games over time. Plus, "in theory" I can just drop things at any time and do a bunch of patreon animations, however it's obvious I don't have the motivation for that.

As for Noaika...ehh....The main stuff that needs to be done is almost all stuff that needs to be done anyway, including things like music and bug fixes.

      Delete
    2. Well I hope you figure out a solution that you'll be happy with. Is it weird if I say I care more about that than your products? I mean, in a sort of distant relative kinda way. :p

    1. I mean, I don't really "accept" donations so much as they just occur. Whether people find the donate button that's hidden away is up to them.

That said, people who want to pay me for the games can just buy the games, and accomplish pretty much the same thing. Either way, I'm not too worried about it, and I think the people who pre-ordered deserve something a little extra

      Delete
    2. I can never argue with someone who wants to get better at the craft but compared to a LOT of H-games out there you are certainly a top tier. Think the only games I actually have fun with aside from yours are the Artificial Academy 2 and the games by eh, whoever made Wankuri and Usasituke. Demon Sperm is a close contender on the action side. I know you mentioned Nutaku as a seller as well and even though they just translate, most of the games themselves are boring.

While I do appreciate the idea of giving to pre-orders I know I plan to buy the games myself.

      Delete
    3. I know what you mean, I've only played a handful of H-games I'd consider actually fun to play. It seems like you either get visual novel things with pretty good art but no gameplay, RPG Maker games, or platformers with mediocre art and wonky programming. I think I've yet to try an H platformer that looks and feels as good to play as Kurovadis or Eroico, even though at the end of the day there's not much to them.

My favorite H-game is probably Sengoku Rance. I consider it really good even at the standard of non H-games, although it's mostly a visual novel (with an addictive strategy game backbone). I like Artificial Academy 2 up until I get out of the character creator and finally start playing. Way too random and shallow for me.

I just like to believe sometimes I have standards even in this hellscape we call hentai games lol.

  25. Just asking, are you going to sell your game more expensive? like "Fighting Girl" series sells around 2000yen, and MASURAO's also sells around 2000yen.

I think your games are totally worth this much with such high quality. I always enjoyed your game. "except Eroico it's not my fetish"

    ReplyDelete

    1. Noaika will be more than $5 since it's an actual full sized game ($10 maybe). Games like Eroico and Kurovadis will always be cheap, though, and anything smaller will be cheaper.

      Delete
  26. Is "keeping to your standards" worth not releasing content or having to give up on full-time development?

That's entirely your decision, and if you're an art-for-the-sake-of-art expressionist then I completely understand you not wanting to release something that you don't feel reflects your message or entire scope of your ability.

I guess I don't see how you view your own work in its entirety and that's why I feel compelled to tell you "quit over-obsessing and sell some games so you can not starve". Maybe your work, to you, has a price tag as more of a courtesy rather than just because you want to earn profits. And maybe this is an attempt for you to sustain yourself long enough to continue to express yourself in this art medium rather than to form a business and make a good profit.

I just hope you're proud of your prior releases and, despite now being capable of doing more impressive things with what you learned, you can appreciate the charm of the titles and the effectiveness of the simplicity in their design. Your titles don't have to be overwhelming triumphs of skill and design in order to be good games.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nah, I'm not an art for the sake of art guy. I'm a "I like art and money lets me keep doing art" kinda guy. The way I see it, making good games and more profit go hand in hand, so I need only worry about making good games. My hope is that as I get better, I'll get faster and more consistent, too. Being healthier would help, of course -___-

I'm proud that I made my previous games when, and how I did, but I'm not proud of them as games outside of that context. Eroico, specifically, has some bad examples of actual negligence. I'd say Eroico is bad, and Kurovadis is passable in some ways, but neither are what I'd consider good games.

      Delete
    2. Weird since Eroico was alot more enjoyable. It has some flaws like the op gun later on but these things stay in the minority.

  28. Hey, if you're looking for financial gains you could always make an individual 'gallery mode' sprite viewer for Kuro, bundle it with a demo, then release it on DLsite for $3-4. Gets some extra cash, gives existing fans a cool way to 'donate', and it could pull in new customers.

    Just a suggestion.

    1. Kuro's H sprites aren't really good enough to sell on their own, and the game itself is already $5 here.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This comment is gonna look a little strange but regarding your depression, how is your work environment? You've said you might work out more too and that's great. I'm not implying that you work in awful conditions but sometimes just knowing that you work in a place you can call home can really help lower stress levels and get productivity into a higher place. My depression isn't 100% gone now but around a month ago I decided to re-organize my room and even personalize it a bit (my room was very much a blank slate) and it's lifted my spirits a fair bit and helping do a bit more and actually feeling better doing it. Again, this is just a suggestion since I obviously don't know your conditions but sometimes the simple things are a great pick-me-up. Hope you can find that balance and let me know if you have something else that's helped your depression a little 'cause I'd like to know too. ^^'

    1. Well, my room is a good size, and I generally keep it clean. However, I tend to keep my room bland. I tend to not be enough of a "fan" of anything to buy things like posters. I may try stuff like that at some point.

More than that, though, I think what I really need is a change of location (I also hear that working in a different place from where you sleep helps).

      Delete
    2. Hmm, working from a different location to where you sleep does sound like something worth trying. I'd have to think about where I guess but not something I thought about before so that's good.

I guess as for personalising your work space would be anything to what inspired you to be where you're at now and why you're doing it to something like your favourite colour slapped onto your wall with a pattern you like. Not everything has to be merchandise as such but really anything that reflects the kinda stuff you like. Picture of a flower field for example or a quote from some famous guy on your wall that might of maybe got you thinking "I'm gonna make video games/art". It really doesn't matter as long as it makes you feel comfortable I find.

Anyway, glad to see that you've got somewhat of a plan now. Maybe once you get the financial situation relatively stable, it'd be worthwhile to focus on finishing the Eroico updates; might get a nice sales boost from that.

    2. Just hurry up and make us some more porn, you lazy/depressed blob! ;P

...Joking aside, why do you do H games, Kyrieru? Is it because you really enjoy doing them? Or is it to pay the bills until you're "good enough" to work on a "normal game?" If it's the former, then carry on - I don't have much advice for you. If it's the latter, and you'd be making "normal" games in your ideal world, I'd seriously suggest working on what you *really* want to make on the side, while your H work pays the bills. I really think working on a project that you *really* want to make for yourself would do wonders for you.

Just my two cents. You seem like a nice guy, so I worry sometimes when you go a long time without updating, especially when you talk about your health troubles and how unmotivated you sometimes feel. I don't think it's healthy (or productive) if you're feeling "trapped" by your work.

Anyway, all the best to you. Keep up the good work. Just remember to take it easy and work on things *you* want to work on as an artist once in awhile. You're not helping anyone if you're working while burnt out.

Seems all devoted content creators I know suffer some kind of disability or have serious problems irl, erotibot is actually colorblind, yet he colors beautifully and suffers from insomnia too (there are few more, but don't really say any names, erotibot has made that public so no harm there). And here I am, no money worries, no school, no health problems, not a care in the world, yet I'm the laziest/lousiest of them all. Now, I'm not usually one to comment on things like this, and I don't really have much to add, but I hope you will find the time and calm required to finish your work, sometime.

    Oh, and uh, good luck.

Your blog and your games were fun to play, too, not just for the sake of adult content. Like spending hours to level up in Kurovadis and getting frustrated at grapple attacks sometimes, because it's a truly honestly good game.

You really do a lot for your admirers whether you know it or not. If there's anything they want done, we eventually ask you. For now, I'm just waiting for you to get better. And if there's anything you need done, I'm here to try and help.

    WEEEEEEEEEEE GOT EEMMMMM!

But no really. We obviously care and want to buy your things or else we wouldn't be wasting time checking these comments everyday for an update. Your stuff is higher quality than legit 99% of what gets thrown on patreon or hits swfchan or boards like legendofkrystal. And those people rake in monthly $$$ like no ones buisness and still churn out total shit. But you put out games that are challenging with quality gameplay, sound, atmosphere and art which the above usually skip one of the 4.

Hell, that should be apparent itself just by the people that are literally speedrunning Kurovadis, just for the gameplay and challenge.

I'm still hyped for Noaika, and possibly any re-cg-re-release of Kurovadis. Eroico wasn't my shtick so much as I'm not into male-protag so much, so I'm especially hype for this.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Today is the two year anniversary of when Noaika went up for preorders, isn't it? And look at where we are now. I'm sorry to say that I've lost almost all of my faith in you during this long period of time, though I realize that a lot of your more rabid fans (many of whom didn't invest in the game, I would wager, and thus don't care as long as they get their animations) will flock to defend you, so you won't have to feel guilty about it. It's just that it's incredibly unfair to put your faith and money in someone who then decides to work and make money on other projects while publishing nothing about the project that people have already paid for out of their faith and respect for you, and then you treat them as if they don't exist or are being unfair if they bring up the question of where their investment has gone. You've literally shown nothing but a reworked sprite of the protagonist this entire time, while entire games have been started and finished in this same time span. Sheesh.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. While I sympathize with your general feelings on the matter, you're being pretty dishonest saying he 'treats those people as if they don't exist or are being unfair'; to the contrary, he's very self-critical and demeaning in most of his general posts and responses when it's brought up.

He knows the score and that he's failed in some regards. If you're so tilted about it, request a refund, which I believe he gives and has openly stated repeatedly, and move on.

      Delete
    2. It's not so much the refund. It's just the hope a game from Kyrieru brings being dashed away. This game is never coming out I'm afraid. I don't think he's working on it, with his patreon animations taking precedence over everything else. The best we'll get for a good long time is just these animations.

      Delete
    3. "Investment"

  72. Sometimes you don't bounce back from things like this. Best of luck to you, but I'm not exactly awaiting your return.

    ReplyDelete
  73. He's self-demeaning as an escape from actually confronting the problem, though, which is that there really hasn't been any progress on the game. He could probably get the whole thing knocked out if he just sat down and plugged away at it for a month or two, considering it's almost done anyway. Yet he's sucked himself into a cycle of depression and self-loathing in order to avoid it. That's not healthy, and not only does it hurt himself, it hurts the community around him, whether it's his real life social network or the online one.

Just because he's aware that he's "failing" (which is bullshit btw, because the only time you've failed is when you've given up), doesn't change the fact that either he's not doing anything about it, or he's not telling us about the things that he -is- doing about it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You sound like the EXACT type of person who's never actually developed a game neither knows how long it takes to make one alone when all assets (high quality too) are your own.

      Delete
    2. The problem isn't that he's given up, it's that he became too ambitious with the project and now it's too late to go back. He showed us a remake of the character sprite, which means he must have redone every single other enemy sprite to match. That means new animations and new levels to match the new sprite sizes. That doesn't sound like a lot, but just doing a single animation for a character can take hours.

He's already gone into this at length though, it's just that everybody here is so salty that their porn isn't getting to them fast enough that they forgot everything Ky has said regarding this.

      Delete
    3. @FrostedFireFly haha, sounds like you've never developed a game either. The fact is, the same things remain unfinished now as did 6 months ago. It sounds like you've never experienced the crushing defeatism that you go through when you get depressed, either, so maybe you can be forgiven. The thing is, though, Kyrieru has admitted all of this himself. So go whiteknight elsewhere.

  74. Undertale took about 2 years after finishing the basics of the game and mostly finishing the first area.
With a relatively massive donation pool.
...and it was a good game, but it still looked kinda bad, even if going for an older style.

The delays are still delays, but they're not THAT long. Not for doing other animations and projects on the side and actually making something that looks nice and plays smoothly.
He could always go the EA route and rush out a pile of crap, but then noone would be happy.

Toby dox got over 50000 US$ through kickstarter although his goal was 5000 US$ he also had an artist for his Sprites i think. And it still took a bit more than 2 years to finish.

well i dont think Kyr had 50000 US$ to spend on his game(s), he even said at some point that he needed some money if i am correct. wasnt there even a comment of someone who said he pirated his game?...well great help from your side then to help Kyr whoever it was.

Kyr is doing his sprites alone and dont even think of saying something like "he could have hired someone". *refers to money problem*
he does not have any artists by his side.

Those two in comparison: I think i can wait, preorderd or not. look at those differences in graphics. i´d like to see good sprites in a porn game and not something like these crippled UT sprites (sry passerby, i just didnt like the art style of Undertale :p )

    2. I think people are just antsy because it's about to be 3 months since he last updated his blog in just a few weeks. Also, I know he hates showing off what he's working on because he's a spoiler free fanatic, but it'd be nice if he could at least show something.

He said he had this secret game that was almost finished back in January and he was going to give it away to those who donated and also sell it. What happened to that? Is that the astroid game, mario/sonic game, castlevania? It'd be nice for details. I wouldn't be surprised if once again he decided to change those games to add new mechanics or sprites and once more taking bigger bites than he can chew. Honestly, maybe he should do what a certain youtuber did and hire a boss who can keep him on a straight track and help him from deviating from it too much.

I fully understand the whole I want to make it look better and scraping stuff because it's not good enough for yourself, but the original Noika demo was by far better than a huge percentage of games that came out. Instead of essentially restarting over again he could have added all that in a new game.

I still think you're awesome though Kyrieru. I'll continue supporting your patreon and I hope your health, financial, and personal problems are able to get better. Also, hope for your self management skills to come in order. You remind me too much of someone I worked with.
