*Sigh*

Alright, here's the deal.

I can live off making H games, but that assumes that I actually release them. As it stands, the current game is taking to long. Or rather, long enough that the idea of working on it until it's done makes me feel uneasy about the coming months. Could I finish it before money becomes an issue? Definitely. Should I test that assumption? The simple answer is no. And as much as I feel bad whenever I write these "I need to work on a different project" posts, I need to take the action that ensures I can continue to make games for a living.

So, here's the situation.

About a week ago I began working on a new game. The idea is just to make something simple. Or rather, something I'm so familiar with that the development itself is simple. There's no story, no gameplay mechanics to be indecisive about, I'm just doing what I know I can do at this point.


When will it be done? Well, honestly I'm probably closer to a demo of this game than the other one. 

As for the previous game, I'll be picking it up again the moment this game is finished. Unlike other abandoned projects, the reasons this time are purely financial. Like I said in my previous post, I'm actually pretty enthusiastic about working on it.

So, that's that. Other than the above image, I'll avoid any real details, for now. I'll be releasing a demo of it when it's ready anyway. I considered just posting the game when it was done, but people starting thinking I died. So, you know, disclosure.

  2. I don't comment much, but what I will say is whatever your next game is, I'll be eagerly awaiting it however long it takes. Hell, Kurovadis was pretty much the first game to show me that games can both be extremely fun AND pornographic, too!

  3. I'm going to be the first negative post here but I'll preface it a little...

    So you are my favourite H-game maker... no questions there. I have NEVER paid money for H-content of any kind until I played kuro, and now I've bought your 2 games, parasite city, and i'm looking at other H-game makers eagerly awaiting some of theirs as well.

    TL;DR I love your shit.

    On to the bad part. I always checked your site once in awhile for updates, but once you said there would be a demo this weekend (referring to a long past weekend) I was excited. When that got delayed I wasn't surprised or dissapointed... but at this point I've been checking the site daily for always 2 weeks past the pushback and now you are on another project. I'm ok with it overall because frankly there is nobody else that is making the games you are... i'm just a little disappointed is all. I would STILL rather you wait and make the RIGHT game rather than rush it to appease my impatience, but still. had to tell you! Keep up the good work and work on your focus :P

    1. Well, it's more or less a matter of time. 5 days I could spend on getting the other game ready for a demo are 5 days I could spend getting 30% of the short game done. Like I said in the post, I'm pretty close to a demo with the new game, so I'm not going to bother with the other one until this is done.

    3. Probably not. If/when I do something similar, I'll probably do something lower res. If I do something that high res again, it will be after I've worked my way up to it, or have other artists to help with enemies.

    I think the above posters are going a bit easy on Kyrieru. Well, we are being held hostage over the next game, so there's an incentive to be nice about the timeline, I guess. Is this a gaming equivalent of Stockholm syndrome?

    As an aside, I often check this blog 2-3 times a day, so that adds to the frustration.

    1. I would agree that people seem to go pretty easy on me when I delay projects.

      On the plus side, it's actually a bit more effective than anger. If I posted something and people said "You're a fucking procrastinating loser", I probably wouldn't really care about their opinion. On the other hand, "I'm disappointed, but I'll wait" makes me feel bad about doing such things, and it makes me want to meet expectations.

      In this case, though, it's not really a matter of enthusiasm, or appealing to players. I'm just taking the road that ensures that I can make a living before trusting in myself to take a risk.

  14. Honestly, if that game is guaranteed to be finished. I'd "pre-order" it. I'm sure others would to. Perhaps that could help off-set some of the financial issues.

    2. The only financial issue is that I haven't released a game in like, a year. Otherwise there would be no issues lol.

      As for pre-orders, I don't know, something about the concept just doesn't sit right with me.

  15. Well I think it's bad to split your time between different projects, but I can understant the money issue. So I will say the forbidden word, which is trading your originality (and soul) for easy cash...

    ...sequel...

    ... yes, I said it. Think about it: making a sequel to eroico or kurovadis is way easier than making a new game: most of the sprites are already there, the mechanics are already defined, you just have to add some plot, a handful of new enemies, a couple boss and there! You can release something.

    1. Well, I'm already pulling code from past projects, which is why it already wont take as long. A sequel would more or less take the same amount of work, because the majority of the time would be spent doing new graphics for enemies, tilesets, music, sound, level design,etc.

    Anyway I understand where your coming from, I picked up game development as a hobby at the end of the summer before last summer. And I have to say its just mind blowing at the amount of stuff to learn before you can even begin to put a game together. (providing you want to make something unique and not just a lego rpg maker game)

    I find while working on your own its pretty hard to criticize your own work, sometimes it looks off, but you just can't pin it down. I find myself gong back sometime later and saying "that's what I did wrong!" or "that's what I felt was off!". Unfortunately because you want to more or less surprise everyone you don't want to show stuff that is in production, so your stuck being your own pushy boss.

    I think the short project is a great idea, you can always make the game length reflect the price, and make enough money to keep yourself afloat while you "perfect" the projects you want to.

  17. I've dropped so many games as well. They are projects I want to finish, but they became too daunting. It really is best to stick as simple as you can when this happens so you're on the right track! Besides, I'm sure you learned some programming tricks to make your time easier making this new project too.

  18. Have you ever thought about making a new game or sequel using the existing mechanics of one of your older games? Like Eroico 2, just to build on that success. You have the code and lots of assets, you could just mix up some moves, make a new character, like a girl instead, new monsters...

    I loved Eroico and Kurovadis. I would love to have more content for those games in some form.

  19. Damn, I was looking forward to this game so much. I was ready to drop my cash on it, day one.
    I really, really do hope this doesn't get left behind and it does finally see the light of day at some point because I'd definitely buy it.
    As for a quick game to offset financial issues, I can't fault you there. We all need cash. I just hope that you can actually make this game quickly. Rather than think it could be done quickly.

    1. The game won't be dropped. I'm more or less only doing this for financial reasons, unlike previous projects where they were dropped because I was unenthusiastic about them, or they weren't working out, etc.

    2. You do what you have to do to remain financially well. I won't think less of you for that, you need food on your table as much as the next guy. I'm really glad that you're so enthusiastic about completing your other game and like many others I'll wait and wait.
      At the end of the day, you owe us nothing. We haven't paid for anything. We have no right to sit here and demand the earth from you or anything, it's understandable that people get annoyed with the delays and such, but when it comes down to it, I'd have a game be delayed 5 times and be amazing rather than be on time and mediocre.

    3. Better to have someone who's practical enough to realize that there's no need to risk running out of money mid-project, really. Though, I don't think any guilt is particularly warranted when there's such a pragmatic rationale-- it'd take delays the size of Duke Nukem Forever to get any lasting vehemence over it... which would obviously be quite beyond the whole money 'deadline'.

  20. I have a rather extensive well of patience when it comes to your stuff. So far my remaining patience is at about... 75%, shall we say? Fortunately, the consequences of it hitting zero are just that I stop checking this blog 2-3 times a week, and that my interest in this project switches from "active" to "passive".

    Regardless, I'm glad to hear something else is coming soon, even if it isn't the project you've been flaunting recently. It should be sufficient to tide me, and likely many others, over until we can get a demo of the original.

    Just keep pressing forward.

  24. Personally: I've liked the other games you've come out with, and have found it difficult to find ero games I can understand that still play well. I check in on this blog a couple times a week because I look forward to what you come up with.

    Call me a "fan-boy", but I think I'll buy almost anything you make. However, I feel less 'fan' and just a bit more trusting based off of the last two games I bought.

    You have yet to let me down when I actually make a purchase, and I don't feel comfortable complaining about something that I have yet to pay for. So, I guess I'll just wait a bit longer.

  25. 2 weeks later: wow guys i got SOOO MANY CRAZY IDEAS for this game it's gonna be bigger than anything i ever made i'll be releasing a demo in a few days

    3 weeks later: whoops i guess i have to work on the demo for a few weeks more haha ^^'

    4 weeks later: guys im putting this game on hold cuz i'm bankrupt but ill be releasing a short game in its stead i hope you guys understand

  27. Ugh... whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?!?! So disappointing, out of all the big name artists that are releasing games this year you're on my top 5 of those I expected sooner rather then later. No offense, not interested in this "new" simple project that you're releasing as I'd imagine a filler until the real game. If, and that is a big 'if', this was a democracy an everyone had votes; mine would be towards finishing the game you've started on rather then putting out something new that's easy an quick to make. Financially speaking, I can see why this issue has taken precedence over other things which I get it, we all need a source of income but pushing back the date again is like taking a direct hit to the face! Blargh!! *man down!* *man down!* Anyway, do what's important to you as always, at the end of the day you have to consider yourself before others otherwise the future may not look so good. Good luck, you always have my support and I'll check back in a month or so to see some updates. Cheers man.   32. Make your money, Ky. You have to put your financial stability above all else, and you're making the right move. You have good foresight, which too many indie devs lack.

    When deciding to be an indie game developer full-time, you can't just let your income from the games you produce be the only deciding factor. Living game-to-game is like living paycheck-to-paycheck in any other job. You have to think "Am I going to be making a new game every two years for the rest of my life? How many games can I come up with and develop on my own before I'm sick of it?"

    Not even Notch who made a fortune off his indie project was working alone on it. You have great determination and talent, but you can't take everything on by yourself. You need to think about either expanding your present company of "just you and maybe an artist" to more programmers and designers, or pursue a career with another game company. Minus the H content, your Kurovadis and Erocio games are phenomenal portfolio pieces.

    Whatever you decide to do, I hope this side project makes whatever money you'll need to tide you over til you complete your next project. I'll chip in however I can.

    And fuck all you people complaining about how you're "tired of seeing devs back out of projects". Go read a fucking book or something. Many games in the regular professional game industry never take off past a certain point, these blogs by indie devs are just the first time you've ever seen it happen. This isn't uncommon, and it isn't something exclusive to indie games.

    1. Actually, the vast majority never release a game to begin with, let alone those that have any tangible quality as -either- game or hentai-- let alone both. Top that off with having two full releases and being savvy enough to not bankrupt himself in the whole process, and I don't think anyone has a right to call Kyri out on 'backing out' when what makes him different is, by definition, the fact that he has -proven- that he finishes games, and even that it's not a 'one-shot-wonder', given that Erico was a solid game in its own right that wasn't simply a watered-down Kurovaids or the like.

  34. Money always becomes an issue. Do what you gotta do and I'm sure a lot of us will be around to pick up the previous game whenever it gets finished. As long as you don't release something that you're dissatisfied with, I'm sure it'll work out;.

    2. That's literally the contradiction of a demo, lol. If you are going for an unlock file like in Eroico or Kurovadis maybe you can offer 'early access' to that file, so people can already buy it and when the game is out they just need to get the base.
