Game Maker Standard is apparently free for a limited amount of time. So go download it -__-
Even if you're just an artist and can't program, I'll eventually be releasing templates for making H games, so download this while you can, as it'll allow you to use the templates when they come out.
w00t! Now I can make me some games!ReplyDelete
Glad I check your blog every dayReplyDelete
I'm running out of excuses, man. Going to have to stop being lazy soon. :PReplyDelete
I've had game maker for a few months now and it's been interesting to fiddle with. However though I want to make games with it the idea of making a video game has always been so daunting that I never know where to start. Maybe someday I'll get the focus to do so. :)ReplyDelete
On a side note there is a series of game maker tutorials on youtube done by Shawn Spaulding (I think that's his name) that are very well done and quite informative if anyone is interested.
Think you could offer the projects for your games to people who have purchased them? Now that I have a copy of GMStudio I'd be willing to sink some time into updating them to the new version.ReplyDelete
I was going to use game maker when I finally decided to get off my ass and start learning game dev.ReplyDelete
I found out that they have DRM on it and I would have had to check in with big brother every two months or be flagged as a deviant and the program would do "bad things" to all my game files.
I know most people don't really mind it as they will work online a lot to get concepts working. I kind of have a problem with it though, other then the angering thought of having someone having the power to "pull the plug" on me, I have an offline workflow on a separate machine that I just use for game development.
I prefer this setup, it give me the illusion of a quiet room with no distractions and security will never be an issue. I also am less tempted to use the powerhouse dev rig for gaming and downloading and filling it with useless crap off the net. I'll still use my online/game machine to prototype scripts and other things that I may need to learn, but the final build is done on the dev computer.
Decided to go with another IDE in the end that allowed me to register it via reg file and it doesn't require big brothers seal of approval on a regular basis.
I'm torn between getting it and not due to that same problem...well, there's a week to decide.Delete
It's free, why not just get it anyway?Delete
If the time comes that it doesn't have to validate every two weeks, you'll have a serial number you can use.
Game Maker is a terrible IDE. D:
Indeed. You can tell it's terrible by the way I'm making a living off making games with no real programming skills.Delete
In other words, great for an experienced programmer? Perhaps not. Good for artists? I think so.
People bash GameMaker too much. It's true there are far better programming languages than GML however GameMaker offers an easier interface and a great community to get started on making games, and that's what makes it so good.Delete
I am both an artist AND and a programmer.Delete
I've had... "issues" with that program in the past, that could easily have been resolved by Game Maker being optimized for performance. Not just packing in more garbage, like Flash.
For one, 3D Surface rendering is enabled by default, causing problems for customers who have low-end PCs. Even if their machine is well more than capable enough of running the game. THAT in and of itself makes it a bad program.
Lastly, the Room Editor. Ugh.
While great and all, you being both an artist and a programmer doesn't make the program less relevant to those who are not. A piece of software is as useful as it's ability to do what the individual user wants it to do. In my case, it does, in your case, it does not.Delete
Indeed, at some point GM may not be relevant to me either. But for now, it's been the stepping stone it needed to be. It's far from a bad program.
You should specify that Game Maker Studio STANDARD is currently free, as their is a Game Maker Studio Free that is always free.ReplyDelete
"Game Maker Standard is apparently free for a limited amount of time. So go download it -__-"Delete
Actually, I changed it based on his comment >_>Delete
Downloaded. Use to MMF2 though. Think I'll catch on with it?ReplyDelete
