Windows 8

With windows 8's release, I need to take OS compatibility into consideration for future projects.

If you have the time, I'd like to know if you plan on upgrading to windows 8, and if so, when. I've added a poll on the right side of the blog. This may also be a good time for me to consider including Mac support, which I'm sure couldn't hurt.

  1. I suppose that someday I'm gonna upgrade, but I believe that it will be far more distant in time than 5 months. I've upgraded to Windows XP when Service Pack 3 was out, and to Windows 7 after Service Pack 1.
And since W7 is pretty solid and give full support to 64bit instructions and multicore processor, I do not see any need for fretting...

  2. Even untill now I still use XP SP2

I've planning to upgrade , but it definitely somewhere above 1-5month
Maybe Next Year , though I vote 1-5month in the poll.

  3. I don't really use either much, but I won't be upgrading my Windows machine. 7 is solid enough, and I'm not particularly fond of 8's interface.

  4. Currently Windows 7; never upgraded, it just came installed on this computer. I voted 1-5 months because it is possible I'll upgrade within that time, though I'm not exactly planning on it. I'm intrigued by some new features but don't think it's worth the price yet, so I'm waiting for a cheaper way to get it or to hear about something exclusive to it I want.

  5. Maybe around 2014...

  6. Why would I want to upgrade to 8?

  7. I'm currently using 8. I hope this answers your question!

  8. No option for, "I don't know right now" I see. Well, that is what my choice would have been.

  9. Only gonna upgrade if I need to buy a new computer and the OS that comes with it default.

  10. From what I read somewhere directx 11.1 will be Win8-exclusive, so I guess if you want to use it, that's that.

Linux user here (you can guess about my need to 'upgrade'), and although wine works good enough, native ports would be delicious. Maybe have a look if you do the Mac port ?

    1. I don't think we're gonna be using a whole lot of DX11.1 features in a 2-D platformer game, but that may be a total misconception on my part.

    2. I'm assuming he just meant in general, for the average user playing 3d games.

  11. I'm currently using Windows 8. Turning it down is like saying "I don't like progression in technology" o.o

    1. Did you say that about Vista as well? Most people notice a pattern - every other windows sucks. Reinstall 7, skip 8, and consider getting 9 when it comes out. If patterns continue, then 9 will actually be a good OS.

    2. Yea...seems like they just tried to be too different. Not so much turning down technology, as turning down something like a mouse with a million buttons or an oven made for high altitude; it could be useful, but why the heck would I want it? lol

  12. im currently on Win8 aswell, despite the massive brainfarts microsoft put in it, i just needed the things that they actually improved upon. as for compability ive managed to play kurovadis up to the succubus and it worked flawlessly atleast that far, gonna finish it later this week though.

    1. Hm, perhaps a I have nothing to worry about then. I wasn't aware that the version of Game Maker I'm using is compatible with 8. Some code has change, but apparently nothing I use.

    2. alrighty, just finished the game with a 100% run and didnt encounter any problems whatsoever, so it should be fine, although as always that doesnt mean someone with a different system configuration wouldnt have any problems but thats left to be seen. :P

ps. cant wait for the new game :F

  13. Microsoft really bombed the advertising for Windows 8...
At first I hated it because it looked like you had to use an Xbox menu for everything, but apparently the normal interface is basically 7 (albeit with some stupid tablet-style controls here and there).

Still, won't be upgrading for as long as I can since I know 7 so well, hehe.
And I'm more of a do it manually type when it comes to things, and while not as much as they made it look (Really, is that attractive now? It looked so bad I was going to skip it.), it did look a bit more limited for people that know the ins and outs of computers somewhat.

    1. ...judging from the replies of that poll, I'd say a lot of people think the same way xD

  14. Not gonna get it until I build or buy a new computer. There shouldn't be too much compatibility you would need to do, anyways - unless you're building and compiling an entirely new engine.

  15. I'm not going to get it until I absolutely have to, but I don't see how it wouldn't work on it anyways.

  16. What I find funny is how many people say 'when its cheaper' or whatnot. Its friggen $40 on Microsoft's site to upgrade, and will be that way until January. Anyways, I'm already on Windows 8, and everything I've used that worked for Windows 7 and Vista works for Windows 8 flawlessly o-o; Windows XP programs are a bit iffy.

Besides this so called 'new interface' (its called 'Metro', people), it improves over everything that was in Windows 7. Needless to say, worth the upgrade and more. x3

Still, I wonder if Microsoft plans to backport the native support for 8-core processors. (I've heard Windows 7 SP2 will have some backported enhancements from Windows 8.)

    1. Eh, leave 'Metro' on the tablets...looks like it's for tech-illiterate people or something.

  17. I'll upgrade when I get a new computer as well, unlike my dad I'm not interested in becoming a beta tester for M soft for free. Since you use Game Maker and other builder kits I wouldn't worry too much, I imagine that the people behind it will work to make it compatible with the latest.

  18. @ Kasey Moore
Chances are relatively high, that there won't be another Service Pack for Win 7. My last info was, that MS wants to avoid SPs in the future and release more "main versions".

The number of Service Packs has constantly declined in the past years.

    Windows 2000 = 4 SP
    Windows XP = 3 SP
    Windos Vista = 2 SP
    Windows 7 = 1 SP?
    Windows 8 = none?

    1. They'll have to release at least one to fix the bugs...
Another reason to postpone getting it, heh.

    2. I noticed that Microsoft pretty much cancelled SP2, such a shame really. It would give many people another reason not to upgrade though

    4. That is incorrect, I think. I could have sworn there was 6 SP's for 2K.

    5. Guess it depends on how long you suffered with it, heh.

  19. I do not plan to 'upgrade' to Windows 8. Not only my current, even if oldish OS is enough for my needs, I am very much not happy with current Microsoft policy of controlling application access and functionality as well as decreasing customization of the system for the user. I don't think you have to worry about that OS as well, Kyrieru, if your poll is of any indication.

    1. I don't get how people consider Vista and later an upgrade worth messing with... I determined that if I was going to break compatibility and wanted an uptodate OS, I'd just look into other OSes entirely. I hate Apples from hardware point-of-view, most others (Sun, FreeBSD, ...) are "not for me", and the Ubuntu OS (Linux) is at least as easy to setup as Windows, so the choice wasn't really that hard.

    2. Oh, and Linux-based OSes can run some Windows games! WinE FTW! :)

  21. Win 8 looks horrible for gaming, and Macs are a joke in terms of gaming, so while I appreciate you looking into that kind of thing, I'm more interested in other aspects of development. ^_^;

  22. I'm sure you already know this but...
If you continue using GameMaker; Studio Professional offers Windows 8, Mac, and portable device upgrades. (Make sure you buy it from their website though, I've read you can get a code for the Steam counterparts free then. Better double check though.) Not sure how much can be transfered over from earlier versions of GameMaker, however... D:

Btw, hey!! I've been away, glad to see you seem to be doing fine :D

  23. No Linux gamer love? My computers are running XP/Server 2003/Ubuntu 12, and the Windows is probably going to get retired to a virtual machine or multiboot option (for games) sometime soon. ;)

  24. I've run Windows 8 for about a year now (developer preview, then consumer preview, then release preview, then rtm). Finished Kurivadis several times on it :)

Unless you're going to push Direct3D 11.1, I don't think there is any reason to worry about Windows 8. Everything that works on Windows 7 will work on Windows 8 as well.
