Deciding on shared poses

In the ongoing game, there will be two main types of animations:

Nude animations:
These animations would not have clothing variations, and only happen when nude. The player's pose and animation would be detailed and unique. Every enemy would have at least one of these.

Shared/generic animations:
The player's pose would be one of two generic, short animations. The poses can be flipped or rotated in order to fit the pose of the enemy. Because these animations would all use the same player part, every outfit would have these two poses, and thus would show up in all generic animations that use them.

Right now I'm trying to decide on those two poses. So far I've determined that the one in the top right is fairly practical given how much it can be rotated. It could be used for most generic sex.

The other pose would need to be used for things like groping, or enemies removing clothing, so it's a bit more difficult to decide on. These are some of my experiments with various poses.

  1. The only notable problem I see with sprite rotation is gravity and hair. This hairstyle is not entirely convenient for rotation.

    1. Well, the shared poses are somewhat of a compromise to begin with, so it's sort of take what you can get, as far as angle is concerned. The only way the head would be different based on the angle is if the head is never changed by clothing, which I wouldn't want to commit to, I think.

  2. Shared animationa could be really cool for the long term and enemy variety! Are you thinking of having a portrait with expressions by the health bar like in the Noaika Demo?

  4. I've been working on a game for a while now and I'm commissioning an artist for all the sprite sex for it. I don't know what angle or position to use which would clearly show both characters having anal sex in a (roughly) 96x96 size sprite animation. A good example that shows both characters seems impossible to find. Any suggestions?

    I'm considering just using the vaginal animations for all the anal instances, but if that's the case then I might as well not have included anal in the game to begin with.

    1. Well, I wouldn't really use one pose for everything unless you have to. The only reason to do it in my case is because there may be a lot of clothing in the future.

  5. So what are your options for how you deal with animating clothing destruction/removal? Is the outfits icon just going to plop onto the ground like dropping a minecraft item (which actually brings to question what kind of inventory system you may use) or have a tearing animation maybe in line with the generic poses above?

    1. Clothing removal will probably be instant, with hitspark effect. The clothing will probably fly off in pieces. This will happen when you reach low health, or during foreplay animations that use the generic pose.

      After removal, the player will probably have to do something to get clothing back, as opposed to it landing on the ground as an item to pick up. Not sure yet though.

    2. Since the game sounds like it hinges on being replayed from the beginning quite a bit, I'd imagine clothing would be a very disposable asset of the game. Random chests with different set values or maybe even shops I'd imagine sell the clothing you need. If it simply dropped to the floor, it'd kind of take away the tension of holding onto your equipment to stay safe.

      I also personally don't think there should be any way to repair clothing assuming there's an armour bar next to the health one to show its condition. If clothing does have its own armour bar or something, I think the only clothing that should be repairable is extremely rare equipment and even then, make it so it costs a lot, or its a risk/reward system for wanting to get it patched up. Like there's a special repair item that you need but it's located inside a strong monster den. So you either choose to get a new piece of easier to find clothing, or you risk a game over rape.
      Other option could be similar but with a higher chance of risk. Like your character could be naked and asks the equipment seller to fix up her clothes. They either agree but for a small fee, or with a higher chance and more natural reaction to seeing a vulnerable girl enter the store, they simply take advantage of her leading to either another game over or perhaps she just leaves the store with rags on instead of the good equipment they hoped to get repaired.

      1: I want restarting/replaying to be fun.
      2: But I also want experiencing H content to not be low risk enough that it's enjoyable.

      So I'm not sure how I'll deal with it yet.

    5. Oh sure, I mean that's why I used an "armour bar" as an example rather than basing the equipment conditions on the player's health. I'm sure you can come up with something better but at least if you've got an "armour bar" that ensures the protection of your character's life then you have a bit of wiggle room to mess up a little. Of course the balance is still important otherwise you might be able to keep "topping up" your armour more than often enough and never really experience any sort of tension in a game where it feels like you could lose your progress at any moment.

    6. Many H animations would be nude only, so it would involve losing clothing or being nude. Basically I'll need to come up with a setup where sex can be done casually. (Of course that may boil down to a nymphomaniac style of gameplay having it's own challanges.)

So maybe rather than enemies only going for sex after the protag has been knocked out, they just need to randomly choose between a normal attack that shakes down their health, or a grab attack that gets rid of their clothes or goes straight into a H animation if they already lack clothes? Kinda sounds like what some H games already do though and I'm not sure how bothered you should be different.

      Though if you want there to be a nymphomaniac approach, might I suggest something along the lines of how it's done in She ill Sever (really not sure how it's pronounced)? In that game the monsters only went after you if your own character was too horny and had to masturbate plus climax to exit that state. Only issue being that masturbating meant making yourself vulnerable to an instant knock-down then the inevitable H attack.

      While I'm not saying it should work exactly with those conditions, an easy nymphomaniac playthrough might be to invite enemies to sex without resorting to knock-downs by teasing them or having the protag masturbate to leave her vulnerable. Alternatively, you could do this exact thing by making your character strip-tease which might drop your equipment to the floor but not destroy it.

      I personally like games where the H conditions feel like a coincidence and the protag feels as if they're trying to get out of a H situation but coming up with these scenarios are fun too.

    2. Artists like to use a placeholder to help with positioning. It's always helpful to have something, even if there's no details. The one my artist made, I refer to as Client X. For example if you're making a game and you need a quick enemy for testing mechanics, but haven't drawn any yet, then a red square will do in a pinch. At least it's not invisible then. xD

  8. As far as a nymphomaniac style of play, I think leaving that up to player choice is best. I can't remember the rpg that did it well but there was one where sex acts would increase your mp, but until you get a certain trait it would do minor damage to you. It made a good balance of times you did and did not want to H without just throwing the fight. I'd really love for you to find a similar balance in this game.

    Just to add to the conversation I'll brainstorm a bit here. Note that the quality of the ideas may vary.

    There could be a skill tree that has different immunity traits or advantages to H, possibly with different starting skills or available paths depending on the "father" creature if you want to do a generational thing.

    Taking from the rpg I mentioned H can just restore mp if you implement magic or special attacks, and decrease hp. This is a lot more immediately achievable than the above idea.

    Perhaps sex with certain monsters can give you a tenporary movement buff (for reasons) that can be used to reach seemingly inaccessible loot.

    While thinking of a drawback for that last one, I was reminded of how the binding of isaac had the angel room that would only open if you didn't buy anything from the devil rooms.
    There could be something like that implemented where sex acts benifit you in the short term but lock you out of specific late run gear.

    From that same tog, I think different classes would react to sex slightly differently, I don't have any specific ideas, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

    Children could be assistants in battle? I'm not big into the giving birth fetish, but mechanically having your children fight for you could be interesting, with variations between the father creatures.

    Speaking of pregnancy, maybe sex could restore mp without losing hp, but if you do get pregnant there is serious downfalls, so like rolling a dice, you'll probably be totally fine, but there's a chance that it'll be what ends your run.

    Okay I've typed a little too much here, but I'd love to hear your thoughts

    1. Not long term changes, anyway. It's not viable to do alternate animations of everything. Only situation I'd do breast sizes is in unique scenarios where other enemies and clothing aren't present.
