Health stuff

Geh, I hate talking about personal issues, however I feel as though I should at least explain my current condition, given how it's been effecting my ability to work properly for a while now.

A month or so ago I briefly mentioned that I was going to get a medical issue checked out. Without going into too much detail, that medical issue is basically "I have to use the bathroom like every 5-10 minutes". There are other symptoms as well, however that's what's been affecting me the most, for obvious reasons.

It started around a year ago, and slowly got worse over time, so I didn't really notice it until it started affecting me on a daily basis. At this point, there are around 2-3 hours after I wake up where I'm fine, and then from that point it basically happens all day, and interferes with my ability to sleep. Early tests at the docter's seem to indicate that it's not something that will be fixed by popping some pills, however I don't think it's something that will require surgery.

A pretty lame sounding medical condition to have to explain to people, and possibly something that will be easily fixed in a couple weeks, however it's incredibly frustrating, especially right now.

As a result, I may look into hiring an artist to help finish the game. I don't really have enough money to risk hiring someone with the money I make month to month from sales, however if I need to, I might sell some audio equipment so that I can hire the artist I planned on working with during the next project. While I'm sure I'll get the medical condition sorted out in time, I don't really want this game's development to go on for much longer in this condition. Working like this sucks.

Just so I'm not leaving you with "Things suck right now, goodnight!", here's a WIP of a song I started for the game. Not sure if I'll go with this sort of style, or something else.

  1. Damn, you can never catch a break, it's either raging fans or the sickness. I hope you get well soon and may the odds be forever in your favor.

  2. Well good luck taking care of the condition, though sorry I can't say much else along that line of help.

As for the music instant flash of Castlevania comes to mind, personally love it!

  3. Have you been eating alright?
I'm hoping it's not something horrible. That's the last thing I need to know is that you have something like cancer.

Get well. Will buy the game when it gets released, promise. Hang in there!

  4. Can't do any sort of commission stuff?

  5. I could imagine that music in a forest level. That's where i think it would fit the most :3

  6. My condolences for your health problems. Less caffeine, booze, and spicy foods have been proven scientifically to ease overactive bladder. There are also some medications you can take that would help you, so don't lose hope.

The music you posted really projects super nintendo tech markers, like music from Super Castlevania or Mega Man X. If you're trying to break through a creative wall, list BPMs on a gradient scale and make 30 seconds of music for each until you become interested in one them, then grab that passion and run with it. Alternatively, you could make more samples like you posted here and poll your audience on which interests them the most, if it's no difference to you. You do have a lot of player feedback that other developers are jealous of. 1400 votes on ideas for the first boss?

  7. How about just investing in some diapers? I hear astronauts use adult diapers when they go up. So, slip one on and forget about your toilet troubles, and produce that game. Same with at night. Just use the diaper and get your good sleep. Or, is it more complicated that this?

  8. Sorry to know about your conditions. Those 'raging fans' can go eff themselves. You need not to jeopardize either your health or your wealth. Just hang in.

  9. Get well soon, Kyrieru. But don't get stressed! Your helth is much more important than anything else, so don't break your head because of some "wasted" hours you could've spend on the game. Just think about how much we all love you :D this will make you feel better.

And I didn't know that canadians say "geh" instead of "gee", haha :D

    Take it easy

    1. Honestly, I don't really associate "eh" with an "ay" sound. I've always thought of it in text as sounding like it would in "meh".

Otherwise, I suppose a homosexual Canadian would be "Geh".. -__-

  11. Well, I hope you get better.

A suggestion as a fellow artist

If you need any help, maybe you could get a art intern (free, questionable results, might have to teach them stuff) or collaboration (Payment when finish)
Though these things come with certain risk (such as laziness, lack of time to explain or unsatisfactory Results)

    Also the music was Great

Don't over work yourself taking a break is good too.

    1. I support collaboration, payment after sales would be a good suggestion since it's pretty much guaranteed that kyieru can't sell the art itself and he has a name now

The question is who would be willing to do that

    2. Well, anybody with good business sense. Receiving a percentage of sales would make you a lot more money than doing commissions. However, I never really plan on splitting sales unless I work in a team where work is evenly distributed. (which I might do at some point.)

As for art interns, I don't really have the highest opinion of my individual skills as it is, so anything lower than that isn't really an option. I'd spend so much time modifying work that I'd just as well be doing it myself.

    3. lol, an art intern.

      "Did you like figure drawing?"
      *nods
"Good, because you're going to be doing that nonstop. Now go."
      'u'

  14. The work in progress sounds nice. Is it intended to be Castlevania-esque?

    1. Yeah. Generally when I compose, I tend to have a certain game or song in mind, which usually leads to following some of that music's tendencies, even though I'm not listening to anything as reference. I'll often end up on a chord or part of a melody where my mind just instantly thinks "what would a ____ song do here"

    2. Careful, you're getting dangerously close to Castlevania, here. Sounds like the main castle theme to Symphony of the Night.

    3. Guh, no, it's not that one actually. Bloody Tears? Vampire Killer? It's one of the more famous Castlevania songs, at least, I think. Anyway, 00:16-00:30 is almost a direct rip of one of the Castlevania songs. People are going to notice that instantly. =P

Having a certain song or series in mind while composing has never worked out for me. I always end up with something like what you have here: a copy of some great song stuck somewhere in one of the back corners of my head, but with a ton of notes changed a little so it doesn't sound exactly the same, which results in a mediocre copy of a great song.

Maybe it works better for you, though. Your other games had pretty decent music.

This song, though, is an almost direct Castlevania copy. When I remember which song it is, I'll let you know, so you can compare. =(

    4. Well, if you think it's similar to something, let me know. Honestly, I doubt that it's melody is actually close to anything, given that I never listen to songs as reference, and coming upon not only the same chords, but also the same lead is pretty unlikely.

I think the similarity you're hearing is due to the chord structure. That sort of "descending" progression that zig-zags between keys is used a lot in Castlevania, and a few other games. The only thing that's actually close to a Castlevania song is probably the way that the motif ends, however it's a very common way to resolve a melody dramatically. (Think the end of the famous toccata in fugue motif).

  15. Do you have any idea what it could be, yet?

    Might be stress related.
I had a bad diarrhea problem and as soon as I solved some issues that kept bugging me in the back of my mind it was gone.

    1. Well, if you wanted to link me to some examples of your work, you can email me at kyrieru@overtureinteractive.com

Though I wouldn't really want to accept help for free. At the very least I'd be paying you after the game was released.
