Progress, looking for an artist,

Well then, progress report.

Things are going slow, as usual. The programming is easy because it's mostly a bunch of copying and pasting of stuff I already finished in the beginning as a template, so it really just comes down to finishing all the graphics. In other words, it will be done when it's done, and when it is I'll be happy that I can finally work on something else... (again, as usual.)

The biggest difference this time around has been that I had no issues planning out the game. Hopefully next time the planning will be easy and it will be something I'm a bit more enthusiastic about. (This will certainly be the last linear and low-res game I ever make.)

Looking for a pixel artist for H animations

I won't be working with a full team until I've finished a few games by myself. However there is one aspect of development I'd like to have covered by somebody else once I start my next game. H-animations. Specifically, any in-game adult content. (Not CGs, just pixel art)

It's more or less the one aspect of developing H game's that I'm rarely enthusiastic about, and most often procrastinate over. I need to find an artist who can put more time and effort into the adult content than I would, so that there's more variety and detail. I figure the content would be much better off if someone who enjoyed making it was responsible for it, rather than just trying to work economically myself.

So, if you think you can match or exceed my skill level in pixel art, then email me at the following address with some examples of your work, and a rundown of what your skills are, etc.
kyrieru@overtureinteractive.com

The pay would be weekly based on the number of hours you worked, starting at $20 per hour, and then moving up from that rate based on the quality of the work and how fast you are. (for instance if the quality was good and you finished everything quickly, then it could be as high as $30-40 per hour to make up for it)

I'll be starting my next game in the next two months or so, so just keep in mind that you wouldn't be starting immediately. However, once I start I can pretty much guarantee enough work for it to be a full time job.

Edit: For now, I've found an artist. On the following game I may hire more.

File Hosts

They all still suck.

  1. 20 dollars an hour? I'll take the job and outsource it to some deviantard kid for 5 dollars per artwork. I have no idea what the going rate is for pixel artists, but $20/hr should get you amazing work.

    1. Maybe it's a subtle hint that it's expected for the artist to make bazillions of quality art pieces, with dozens per every creature? One can dream..

Or, artist is required for game over CG etc. To be honest, I'd rather have plenty of nicely animated, diverse sprite graphics and no CG than just a bit of both, though.

  4. $20 per hour is a rather strange idea of how to pay someone when they aren't coming to a work place of sorts and you don't really see them working.

  7. So the H-content is your least enthusiastic aspect when it comes to your game making progress? That's sort of how it is for me as well, while I may have at first stumbled upon you while searching for H-games, it's become more because of the really great quality of your games in terms of controls and looks. Would you ever think of making non-H games as well or completely switch to non-H games? Granted I don't know how anyone else feels on that subject.
(Sorry for double post, don't know how to edit comments if there is a way, lol)

  9. Haha. I've been practicing sprite art for a bit, but I don't think I'm anywhere near ready for something like this. Shame, because I could really use that money. Well, back to practice. I hope I can work up to your standards at some point.

  10. Next game being non-linear? Sure! But to be hones,t I don't need hi-res pixel art, class of the one you already shown is quite decent, to be honest - I'd rather cut time on detailed graphics and put it into making the game of even bigger scope (more non-linearity, yay).

    1. They may not be "high res", but they will always be higher than what I've done in Eroico and Kurovadis. When I skimp on the detail too much, I get less enthusiastic over time while working on it, because it isn't as satisfying.

  11. So when you say this is the last linear game you're gonna make does that mean this is the last platforming game? I don't think I've ever seen a platforming game that is non-linear. Also I never would have guessed that the H animations were one of your least favourite parts considering that you are making porn games.

  12. An entire quasi-sub genre called metroidvania says hello, actually Kuravadis IS a non-linear platformer.

  13. I'd offer my services but I feel I'm not up to snuff when it comes to two (or more) different subjects interacting with each other, especially not for paid work.

Or up to snuff for animation for that matter... I actually not very good at all.

  14. I'd love to take on this kind of job, but I've never been confident in my art skills in the slightest... Would you mind telling me how you learned to draw? (Or at least give me some advice on how i can get better at it, been getting frustrated lately...)

  15. So you're providing the images and all you want is someone to add the intimate bits? Sounds easy enough.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Just make sure that the artist makes "usable" content. For someone who reviewed Iris Action as a normal action platforming game, not as an H-game, I fear that may not be the case. I mean, kurovadis is pretty much a normal game with H-content as a gimmick to attract that niche audience. The same goes for your mini-game as well. In my opinion, Kurovadis is better off without H-content entirely. When you're making an H-game. The quality of the H-content should also be considered as well. If this is going to be done in a half-assed manner, then you're better of making a normal game with strong game mechanics. I find it hilarious that the one that's dragging you back is when you making h-content for an h-game, as ridiculous as that sounds, at least you're honest about it. It does make me wonder why you're making H-games in the first place. I suppose that's the purpose of the new artist as you've stated. I just hope quality H-content can be taken into consideration. That is all I ask for the artist that will take this job.

    1. I disagree with the idea of no H content, while I agree that his games are awesome without the H content most people aren't going to spend money on a retro game (unless its released for a console).

Also it appeals to an adult audience which in reality have a job/income to actually buy the game, as a kid will more then likely ask parents to buy. Sex sells, that's all there is to it.

I'm still trying to make a game myself and I probably will start with eroge too, I'm not a kid and I'm guessing most of the people that will probably try my game wont be either. Barbi dolling is lame in my opinion. Gamers with an open mind will generally ignore the adult content anyway if they are not intrested.

Until he starts making console games he should stick with the H games.

    2. You're underestimating the indie market for PC in that regard. There are many successful indie devs nowadays offering fresh ideas on their games that would otherwise be a risk for AAA developers.

"Most people aren't going to spend money on a retro game"
This is actually false. Would you believe that many indie devs market their games as being retro and people buy them for that nostalgic feel and for some of them, that nintendo hard difficulty? Hotline Miami is prolly one of the good examples that is widely successful.

While h-games appeals to the said adult audience, it is also targeting a niche audience as well. By making it into a non-h game, you can cater a wider mainstream audience. That is obvious but I feel I need to state it anyway. The thing is most people buy games for the features its marketed on. Purely based on marketing, most people will blindly jump the pre-order bandwagon even without knowing what the game will exactly be like. People also pay for games that they want to support. Gamers can ignore gimmicks and annoyances in the game if it delivers strongly in its original intent. As an example, Kurovadis as an action platformer and Iris action as an H-game.

"Until he starts making console games he should stick with the H games."
Again, I will have to disagree here. It is actually a good time to be an indie dev right now. With Steam greenlight, kickstarter, even youtube, indies gets the spotlight they deserve. Some gaming site even have regular coverage for indie games such as RPS. Indies are not as obscure as they used to be.

    3. While the games offer quite some decent content and features on their own, I know for a fact that lots of it's popularity Kyrieru's production acquired because of being BOTH fun just to play AND quality H-productions.

  17. On file hosts: you might want to scan around http://www.lowendbox.com/ for a cheap VPS. Provided that the VPS provider allows adult content, you'll have absolute control. Well, provided you can set up a webserver, but heck, if you can't I'll volunteer to set it up for you.

  20. If you're going to make a hentai game you should focus more on ero parts.
Since the gameplay of yours aren't bad (considering most of games in this genre have shit game mechanics), I suggest you invest in making a generic indie platformer and stop wasting resources on hentai components.

I've seen so many ryona game projects rise... and fail. Some of them were very promising at the time, but whatever the reason is they end up pretty bad. Only exception will be Shinobi Girl (close to the perfection so far) and Millia Wars (which has only one stage which was very disappointing).

  21. I fucking hate games that are in between... thats why I hate major franchises so much. Think of big titles like Resident Evil, bound to ESRB, critics, and those worthless "board" guys who constantly give pressure to the dev team. It can never show its true potential as a ryona game, as long as it's influenced by commercial success.

Personally speaking, your game's 4/10 or less as a hentai game. So just develop a game will please more general buyers, not leaving tiny bread crusts for "niche" fans.

I guess you are in the track of making games that will succeed commercially. You already gained experience in making platformer genre from your first game and have network with other developers to help your marketing. So just leave this hentai community and let the niche fans rot.

    1. Game's like Resident Evil weren't designed as Ryona games, they were designed as horror games. The point of the violence is to create a sense of fear in the player and impose a more tangible threat. Board pressure has nothing to do with "Ryona content" because it isn't a Ryona game, it simply has content that appeals to that niche.

  23. Hey host.
Y u no make game with adobe flash??
Flash is a lot better than these puny "game makers".

Its like ure using some lame jp indie program over 3dsmax for character modeling.

    1. Obvious troll is obvious. And weak. Play a game and see there are completely no models, just pixel art that doesn't look even close to a 3d model to be at least decent troll.

Also, in case someone will take the guy seriously, there are plenty of issues when it comes to making games in flash. Cross-platform compatibility issues and compatibility issues between different versions of flash being one of them, the fact that most flash action games take tremendous degree of system resources to work smoothly in good quality and full screen - the second.

      Delete
    2. I work in visual art industry and really disagree with your idea.
First, lel. Flash doesn't have bad compatibility... you know what AIR is?

Let's just give a short example.
I can run Shinobi Girl on my android phone, can I run Kurovadis? No.

I don't really use indie programs so don't know shit about what cross platform options Game Maker provides, but Flash is as good as Java in terms of compatibility. Flash just needs the player designed for a certain device.

Latest versions of Flash introduce 3D functions and new actionscript but you can still use AS 2.0~3.0 version of swf to make little games like this.

Performance wise, what makes lag is mainly gradation and transparency objects. You can still use bitmap sprites in Flash which are very well compressed when you publish the result. Flash isn't as fast as C or Java but most of low performance issues on Flash is due to bad coding, object usage by amateur makers.

Pretty sure last part just implies how these non-professional indie developers use primitive third party tools rather than the ones used in big applications. Like using Windows Movie Maker instead of Premiere.
There's no sentence saying Kurovadis used 3D models so get things right when you pretend you know something.

You are no better troll youself, and quite ignorant about everything.
      Peace internet.

    3. I think Kyrieru doesnt have experience using Flash to develop games. But he has his right to choose which program to use right?

      Delete
    4. and internet is full of amateurs yeah... you know the real good ones are always no comment... I know one or two about Flash and agree with James's idea in general.. but better not to feed any troll. ignorance is usally the only legit thing you can do on the web.

      Delete
    5. Flash is a superb program, it just doesn't fit my needs. That being said, Game Maker is hardly a primitive third party tool.

Flash isn't designed around heavy use of uncompressed raster graphics, it's designed around vector graphics. Game Maker is far superior in this regard, and I also prefer GML and Game Maker's workflow over Flash, so it's just what I use. Game Maker can also export to Windows, Android, Mac, as well as Linux, so compatibility is hardly an issue.

You could also try torrenting the game, that's a popular option. As far as I understand it, even League of Legends uses a system resembling torrenting, unless the player opts out.

If you need a tracker site suggestion, here are the 3 cleanest I found:
