Shantae animation

Well, here's the first animation. There's one mistake in particular I'm seeing now, but I'll fix that later.

I might stick it into flash later and see what I can do in terms of controlling the speed of certain parts of the animation and adding sounds. I'd use GM, but HTML5 exports seem like a huge hassle when it comes to uploading the file. However I need to use something that will let me show the result on a webpage, since putting it in an exe would be kind of...eh...

Also, I'll probably go lower res than this most of the time. This animation wasn't particularly time consuming in the grand scheme of things (a bit of time every couple of days), but it's not a size I want to pull off every week,

Next animation is going to be Midna, next Saturday. I'll probably start taking votes for next week's animation once I decide how I'll do it.

    1. Heck, I think Kyrieru could make a game that has sex animation cut-outs like this one instead of on the stage or with CGs on game over and I'd think it was better for it. This does look fantastic and it sounds like it's a lot less work than CGs.

      Delete
    2. Or that, but doing so would create a barrier between the scenes and gameplay. For example, the jellyfish in Noaika that carry you into the air, that I cannot imagine done with a cut-out.

  3. Damn that's really good, makes me even more excited to see what's waiting for us in Noaika. Also have you considered using strawpoll for votes? You could have a a selection of character or fetish votes that change each week.

    1. Nah, that's not it. I just decided not to add it so it would be easier to animate.

  10. I have Flash, I can put it all together with buttons and a zoom feature in like 5 minutes if you need.

    1. Well, I would, but I'll be adding sound effects and controlling animation speed as well, so it's something I'll have to do myself eventually. The other reason to use flash is because then I can control the loops through the timeline or code, rather than just having hundreds of frames.

    2. Cool beans, looks like you got it handled then.

You going to rip sounds from in-game?

      Delete
    3. Music, maybe. But I'd be making the rest of the sounds, or using sounds I already have.

    4. There's GOTTA be a few Shantae hit-sounds that sound like moans.

  12. Only (maybe) mistake that jumps out to me is the lines on the bottoms of her legs when her knees move inward. Doesn't necessarily look wrong, but it doesn't match with the guy, whose body just cuts off when it reaches the edge of the image.

    Still looks great.

    1. Yeah, I'm still working on Noaika. These are just something extra I'm doing for fun, and to give people at least some form of content until then.

  14. Just a thought, but if you're going to start doing this, have you thought about making a pixiv account? Might be a good way to bring in some more Japanese viewers. And maybe do some streaming of the work to make these? You could use Picarto. It's the same site Zone uses to stream the work he does on his flashes.

    1. Not sure if I agree with this. I myself like the way Kyrieru has been doing things. Keeps things fresh, new and interesting. Now I will say that if he streamed his methods and not necessarily future works, that would be a class we all would stay awake for.

  15. Hey Kyrieru I'm a huge fan of your work. I just wanted to ask do you accept donations? If you do, I pledge that I will donate $10 every animation you release on Saturday.

    1. I appreciate it but that seems like a bit much lol.

I've been kind of stubborn about using Patreon, but I've been considering it given how many people email me about starting one. I'll see how I feel about it after doing another animation, given that if I did a patreon I think I'd have to meet a certain level of quality, or do more animations to make it worth it.

In terms of Patreon amounts, $10 per animation would be kind of ridiculous though. $1 would probably be more sensible... or like, $1-2 per "month", instead of every week.

      Delete
    2. I think patreon is a dangerous road for you, Kreckerino.

Not because it's not a good choice, but because you're pretty infamous for having terrible followthrough / scheduling. You're famous for the quality of your work, but renowned as terrible at managing time and being reliable to things you say/state.

I think if you open a patreon you'll get a huge number of donations, sure... but that will give every single person griping about your lackluster schedule and poor followthrough a totally legitimate complaint against you. As it stands, the only mis-step is preorders. You get monthly donations and/or patronage, now you open the door for some *real* bitching. Just sayin'.

      Two cents.

      Delete
    3. Well, I would only get paid when I release animations, so it's not like time management would be an issue even if I did somehow miss one. One animation per week isn't exactly a difficult quota to meet with animations like this.

As for people having a legitimate complaint against me, It would only be legitimate if doing these animations meant that I wasn't working on Noaika when I should be, which it doesn't. At the end of the day, If I wasn't doing these animations then I'd be spending those same couple hours drawing, making music, practicing instruments, playing games, working on other small projects, etc. Pre-orders bought a product in the future, but they didn't buy my life, or the hour or two that I choose to spend animating something for my own satisfaction.

The thing is, there were people who were annoyed that I was planning on doing animations at all. Those people are going to be annoyed regardless of whether I'm doing a Patreon or not, because it's the idea that Noaika is taking longer than it "could" that frustrates them. Until Noaika is released, every blog post, every game I play, every moment I'm slowed down by health issues and every animation I make is like a personal betrayal to them. I can't base everything I do now around people who are only going to be satisfied when I release something in the future, and not before then.

    4. If you were to start a Patreon, what would the rewards be???

      Delete
    5. I honestly think you should start a Patreon, Kyrieru. Artists have been supported by their patrons for as long as art has existed. Even symphony orchestras are funded mostly through donations nowadays - ticket sales wouldn't be able to keep everyone paid by themselves. This is for *world famous* orchestras. I hope you don't consider accepting money from your fans as some form of lowly begging. You're making stuff people want, so people want to help you, so that you can continue doing it. There's nothing dirty or low about it. Patreon and Kickstarter are probably the purest ways to raise money out there. I say go for it. =)
And yes, if you want to be the most "fair" to your fans, accept donations based on animations made, not based on time. Because we all know you, hahah! X'D

      Delete
    6. I'm not sure what the rewards would be, honestly, since I certainly wouldn't be making animations exclusive to Patrons.

The only things I can think of are
      -Patron Streams
-Patrons alone get to vote on every second animation.

Or something like that. I wouldn't want to give them too much voting power, since I feel like it would create a division between people who are paying and those who aren't. "Damn patrons and their terrible taste!" etc. I'm open to suggestions, though.

In terms of stretch goals, I can't really think of many either. I could,
      - Increase the number of animations, but over a longer period of time. (1 extra animation every two weeks, for example (maybe this is what patrons get to vote on))
-Voice actors (Not dialogue, but voice like you see in my games), if I end up doing flash files.

      Again, I'm open to suggestions.

      Delete
    7. Yeah, I don't see too many options for stretch goals either. There isn't really much to add without getting the feeling you're putting to much time into weekly animations. I do think adding sound is a solid first step however.

      Delete
    8. You dont need rewards. Just make your game furry and youll get 10.000 a month no matter how shit it is.

  16. And with that, you've now made the best Shantae porn available on the net. Congrats.

  17. I'd stick to GM if I were you. Sprites look better in html5 then in flash, plush it'd be easier to do for you anyway.
Regarding putting it on blogger, it's easy. All you need is a dropbox and the iframe tag.

I'd be happy to help you put it together if you want.

    1. Wouldn't sprites look find in flash as long as they aren't compressed? Either way, I suppose I'll give HTML5 another look, though part of the benefit of flash is the ability to spread it around.

      Delete
    2. flash is dying

HTML5 = way of da future XD

      Delete
    3. Good point on the spreading it around part. You can't post an html5 animation on an imageboard like e621, hentai-foundry or anything.
Still, it's not all that hard to spread around html5 because of iframe, though you'd technically always be the host...
I've just never seen decent spritework done in flash. Also, GM's resizer's pretty nice, but flash is well... not so nice regarding raster images.

      Pros and Cons everywhere.

      =======================================

Do you have any experience with actionscript?

      Delete
    4. Not much. I made a simple visual novel at one point, and that's about it. I'll having to give my self a refresher before doing anything.

      Delete
    5. The spritework in Breeding Season can be resized without compression or artifacts. Just trace the minimum sized bitmaps with pixel level tracing to convert it to vectors. So long as your spritework doesn't have too many colors, it won't be too heavy on memory.

As for flash being "on the way out", just because it's not trendy doesn't mean it's not useful. People will use what they're good with, and it will only die out if everyone else in the world learns HTML5 instead of flash, in which case it will die out naturally.

Just use what you know how to use.

      Delete
    6. And for clarification, I mean using the Trace Bitmap feature in flash, not tracing it manually.

  20. So is this the quality of the "animated" CGs you planned for Noaika? Or will they be bigger/smaller/chibi/normal proportions?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, initially when I talked about animated CGs, basically what I meant was animating CGs with bone based animation, and having a little bit of rigging (making it so you would see actually insertion, for example, unlike something like Raidy 3).

However, something like the animation above would also be a possibility for Noaika. It takes a little longer than a CG, but I'm sure people would much prefer it over one.

  21. Terrific man, you don't disappoint!
Is it me or did you take inspiration from that demon loli gif that keeps being updated

    1. Well, not particularly. I have seen it though. The vote this time just happened to be for a POV cowgirl (though the original vote was reverse), and straight on is more or less the easiest pose to animate. Without more extreme perspective, there's only so many ways that it could look.

  22. When I first saw the poll I was confused, I wanted you to work more on the game instead of side "activities".

    Now I can see why

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why what exactly?

When I finish working I do plenty of other stuff. It's not as though doing these is particularly time consuming, or taking time away from my work day.

      Delete
    2. Because this is one of the ingredients for Unlimited Boner Works.

If you still don't understand it's because this gives me more hype for the game (and my dick).

      Delete
    3. Ah lol.

Well, to be fair, after this it's becoming more and more likely that I'll just do stuff like this instead of CGs. Until I take a good chunk of time to improve my artwork, my CGs aren't going to be up to the same quality as my sprites, simply because I get more practice with them.

      Delete
    4. As long as this won't take too much longer than just doing CGs, I'd be perfectly okay if you did stuff like this instead of them.

I mean personally I didn't care for the CGs.

      Delete
    5. I mean, I was planning on doing animated CGs anyway, which may have taken just as long, with an inferior result.

    6. sounds cool! I for one would love to see higher res sprites of the Noaika protagonist, assuming you'd do them this high res.
