Text engine, 3d sounds

So, updates

I Finished re-implementing the text engine that I had originally made for Crimson Brave. Actually turned out to work in the new GM without much modification. 


I initially planned on having fullscreen character images, but then I remembered that the player might be able to change costumes, so I decided on simple mugshots instead.

Right now I'm working on the intro to the game, which includes a couple cutscenes and a few basic sections before the player reaches the actual map. The good thing about this as a goal is that it includes pretty much every aspect of the game, so once it's finished I can move on to the rest of the game with the entire engine already in place.

Other than that, the game will now also have 3d sounds. Meaning I can have certain background sounds that are louder or quieter and pan based on your location. Neat stuff.

First of all, I'm pretty sure this is the coolest damn thing ever.

For someone like me who is pretty cynical when it comes to the mainstream games industry, this is exactly the kind of development I want to see. Game designers who made classic games working on projects they care about, free from the financial influence of publishers? Yes please. To be honest, I'm more excited about the prospects of something like this happening more often than I am about the actual game.

  1. I like the 3d sound engine. Now I can hear the enemy even when he isn't on the screen.

  2. I'm actually more amazed at all the scenery and other stuff your able to pull off with just pixels...it never stops to amaze me haha.

    As for Mighty 9, it looks pretty cool and I am excited to see they broke the goal in a day, certainly look forward to playing it.

  3. Wow that looks really good, at first I was a little drawn back at the down grade of the resolution, but now I'm a little excited to get my hands on this.

  4. Interesting stuff, and glad to see you've got progress here. I'm a bit curious, have you got something in the text system to let you skip cutscenes or text crawls?

  5. On new game: Look great. I'm glad your actually going to put some story dialog into it this time.

    On Mega Man clone: -_- cant believe people shelled out that much in one day... Guess it pays to have fame lol

  7. Great to know the text engine worked just fine! However please don't go as modern games that the 'tutorial' is a bunch of stupid text explaining every mechanic like "DONT FALL ON THE PITS YOU WILL DIE". It would be awesome if you managed the first part of the game as the Megaman X series did with every intro level.

    2. My games will never have tutorials.

      As for the sequalitas video, most of it kind of goes without saying. It amazes me how many people fancy themselves game designers and yet see those videos as some sort of revelation. Hell, I know a student in a game design course who was actually taught that they should teach the player how to move with on-screen instructions. Not a good state for an industry to be in, if you ask me.

      As for Arin (ego), he kind of lost any semblance of credibility he may have had over the course of Game Grumps. The guy's great, but damn he can really suck at video games sometimes.

  8. While I was disappointed that you've decided to put your previous project on the back burner, I'm really looking forward to what you're doing now! I really like the idea of a story line with cut scenes and dialog. I think it'll add more depth.
    So I'm pleased to see the text engine working fine and 3D sounds will definitely help to add to the game.

  9. are the character mugshots going to include facial expressions that change based on dialogue? i know it's a pretty trivial detail, but i was just wondering.

    a bigger question: how many cutscenes do you expect to be included in the full game? since it seems you're trying to develop a story, i imagined the gameplay would be interspersed with cutscenes as in most any RPG.

It seems like you still improve when it comes to audio-visuals, Kyrieru, though I hope we'll get that sandbox-ish monster-taming game you've told us about in the past as I think I'd like the idea more of what's going on here. Generally, it seems like non-linearity, replayability etc is in and if you'd make somewhat action-rpgish hentai sandbox game, you'd be one of the first going in that direciton, possibly getting noticeably more profits, too.

      However if I see one violating a young woman, I'll make sure to step in and prevent it from happening. (Even if his hair isn't grey.)
